I didn't try what Gydion linked to yet but testing MT-32, CM-32L and GM they all sound pretty much identical to me (seems the music was made for MT-32), and there's a long delay when booting up and loading a game as mentioned, or going back to the main menu. 10+ seconds with GM, 20+ with MT-32 and CM-32L.
They also sound noticeably worse than this example, which I think is from a real module:

Edit: Couldn't wrap my head around virtualmidisynth but I got Munt to work with the game and the difference is pretty big, plus you can change the music volume individually by alt+tabbing and clicking the slider in the Munt program (at full volume it's a lot louder than the speech in the intro for example, so I recommend ~40-50).
