When launching the game, I have for options:
- Master of Magic
- Master of Magic Community Patch
- Master of Magic: Caster of Magic
- Master of Magic: Caster of Magic Windows

Which is the best version for a new player? I'm interested in something as close to the vanilla release, with bugfixes but without significant gameplay changes.

The "Master of Magic" version is the basic version, patched up to v1.31. The AI compares poorly to bricks on an intelligence test, but they will hurt just as much if they reach a height and fall on your head. They don't really reach those heights on lower difficulties though, so start there.

The Community Patch version is based on the basic game and does more changes, including Insecticide stuff. I think there are AI improvements and other adjustments, but it is still similar.

Caster of Magic is a mod that has much more drastic changes to gameplay and balance.
