The manual says building a city close to Crysx or quark crystals gives + power. What exactly is power? Is that the same as mana?

"Power" means your magic income, which is used for mana generation, research, and casting skill.

This is sometimes confusing because the game uses mana and power interchangeably when talking about magic income, but mana can also refer to your actual mana reserves.

Power can be diverted 3 ways. Spell Research, building up your Spell Skill (mana going into spells each turn and # of spells u can cast during each combat) and Mana Crystals which are needed to cast spells.

Quork Crystals give +3 Power each if they are within your town grid (warning if 2 towns overlap that square you get only 1/2 bonus).

Crysx Crystals give +5 Power and can only be found on the Myrror world.
