In my best start, my starting city occupied a nature node, which had big benefits and a surprising disadvantage. I could take the node almost immediately - in a "highly magical" game where I had node mastery. Very sweet.
After my troops went to explore, I found out they can never go home again. When my troops entered a my city/node square, those troops plus all my city's defenders entered battle with the inhabitants of the node! I could train troops or summon creatures and they appear in the city. But my troops entering the city always encountered the node.
I cleared the node early, leaving me with a question: What happens when an opponent attacks the node/city?
Each time I attacked, the city defenders got pulled into the battle. Has anyone seen what happens when an opponent attacks this combination, and both city and node are occupied with defenders?
