Hi,
I'm playing MoM on a PC, but it often crashes. I'd like to move to my netbook, but alas I can't find the saved games. in the folder, there are no .sav files. Also, I tried to copy the entire folder to the other PC, but when I start the game it doesn't find the saves - this should mean that they are located elsewhere.
can anyone help?
thanks in advance
N
The saves should be called SAVEx.GAM where x is a number from 0 to 9, try searching for that.
If your on win7 or vista have you checked
C:\users\your_username\AppData\Local\ ;Virtual Store\Program Files\gog.com\Master of Magic
The above folder may be hidden. Also if your running 64 bit it will be Program Files(x86)
or C:\users\your username\saved games or \mydocuments?
thanks, found those file :)
I noticed that my saves are in the game folder itself. Do the saves only get placed into the Virtual Store section if you installed the game into c:\Program Files? Possibly due to VAC security, etc...?

Yep, if you install it to say C:\Games or a folder outside of program files and its an old game that used to save to the game folder anyway it will just save to the game folder. Its only all the added extra security messures like VAC that don't allow programs to make changes within the program files folder without administrator allowances.
I should probably mention that savegames here aren't as... flexible... as they are for newer games. I tried moving some old games into a new storage subdirectory, renaming them to something descriptive, then renaming them back to the SAVE?.GAM format and putting them back in their original location. If you've restarted the game after moving the SAVEs, those entries in the list will be empty (obviously), AND the saves won't come back after restoring the files.
Additionally, if you have a game named High Men 1-1 in SAVE1.GAM, then use Explorer to replace that SAVE1.GAM with something else (Barbarian 1-1 formerly in the SAVE2.GAM slot, for example), the entry will still be called High Men 1-1. So it looks like the text descriptors are not explicitly stored in the SAV file itself.
(note: I'm not 100% certain on this. That seems to be what I remember happening when I first tried it, but I didn't go beyond n=1 for testing)
On a tangent, strangely enough the snapshot directory is also located in the same place as the SAVs, but shows up in the Program Files/x86/GOG/Master of Magic folder when I browse with ThumbsPlus (image thumbnail program similar to IrfanView).
