this is the first Gog DOS BOX game that runs realy bad on my 2Ghz PC with over 700 megs of memory

does anyone else have similar system spes that have figured out how to run this game on normal speed

every other DOSBOX game i had to use ctrl f11 to slow down - this game crtl12 dose not seem to work

i had this game back when i had my dx50 with 16 megs pf ram working and it ran fine -- those disks have become corupteted

can ne1 give me any sugestions

thanks in advanvce
You can run the game on just windows XP by using dosbox to go into install.exe and disabling
sound effects and music.
Then go into magic.exe properties and enable expanded memory.
You can also get a stand alone dosbox and mount the game directory and try F8 and F12. it can speed up the game.I
t doen't seem to have a test file that you can edit the various settings in the later versions of it.
I find in dosbox everything works reasonably fast except for saving and going to the next turn, these get slower as the game goes on.
Or you can use VDMsound disable vesa and cd support and disable digitized sound effects in the install exe and play with music only.(instead of dosbox)
You have to experiment to see which sound emulation works best.

Here's one thing you can try:

Look for the .conf file in the game's main directory/folder. Then make a back up copy of that file. Next, open it up with notepad or similiar and find "cycles=". Change the setting there to cycles=34000. Save the file, run the game, and see if that improves it.
thank you for the sugestions - i will try them
I have been fooling around trying to get more speed in dosbox for this game .
I found going into the conf file and changing the resolution from original to the same as my os resolution in my case 1400x 940 and then a little ways down changing aspect false to aspect true.
This helped my game speed greatly.
The other thing I did was give dosbox affinity for core 0 and 1 and then turned the cycles up to over 50,000.
Then I gave it a higher priority than normal (not recommended because it can make your system unstable).
But anyway now I'm running it just like it was intended nice and quick turns etc.
I'm not really sure which of those helped me but that's what i did and my game is now fast
I know that this thread is somewhat old (last post was nearly a year ago), but i was tinkering a little with MoM and Dosbox and found some settings that made the game a little more responsive (faster) on modern systems:

1. Update Dosbox to the latest version (0.74 at the date of this post)
2. Run in windowed mode instead of fullscreen (edit the .conf file line to "fullscree=false")
3. instead of "original" change the window resolution in dosbox do a specific resolution, you can use any resolution, as long as the ratio between y and x is 1.3333333 (i use "windowresolution=960x720").
4. set "frameskip=1" - the skipping is completely unnoticeable on a turn-based game
5. change the default scaler to "scaler=hq3x" - it will change the graphics to a more "cartoony" feel but that render faster.
6. manually set the cycles as Dosbox is not too good evaluating the best ones, i use "cycles=20000"
7. run the install.exe on the MoM folder (you will need to change the .conf file to install.exe where it is magic.exe and turn it back after) and selecte No Sound and No Music - if you want to hear MoM music download the OST files and set it for play in a background app in windows - it is faster and you will hear several tracks you rarely hear ingame.

by doing these steps i significantly speeded up MoM on my system.
I followed most of the tips here and the game is still super slow late game on large maps.
Press CTRL+F12 multiple times to boost game speed - this changes dosbox cycles setting and in my case from snail speed i got a nice increase to very snappy experience :-)
Hi all,

I just bought this game. It still is super slow for the better resolution.

I thought the point of gog. Was to make it to where we could play the games just like they were back then.....
