Is it possible to gain spells that you cannot actually cast? I gained a Guardian Wind spell from a ruin or something and was very excited to use it to protect my weak archers from other ranged fighters, but I can't find it in my spellbook. So I thought maybe it was combat use only, but it's not present even in combat. I only have one book/pick in Sorcery, though I find my research options are frequently full of various Sorcery spells.

So is my Guardian Wind spell un-castable? Will something change at some point, enabling me to cast it? Or am I crazy and just imagined finding the spell?

You can't obtain spells that you aren't (theoretically) capable of casting.

Guardian Wind is a unit enhancement spell and should be available in both overland and combat casting. It's possible that you're just looking on the wrong page, particularly if you've obtained enough of that type of spell to push some of them onto subsequent pages.

One book of sorcery magic will qualify you to learn/cast any sorcery spell you obtain, although your personal research will be limited to a handful of basic sorcery spells.
Guardian Wind is a unit spell. It can be used either inside of combat (for a mana cost of 10) or outside (for a cost of 50, plus an upkeep of 2 mana per turn; this is for each unit you choose to protect).

It should be in your spellbook under Unit Spells; you wouldn't have been able to acquire the spell had you not been able to cast it (i.e. had at least one book in Sorcery).*

So what could've gone wrong?

1) In the spellbook, you weren't looking on the Unit Spells page.

2) You never saved the game in which you acquired the spell; perhaps for some reason you decided to reload and try again.

3) You misremembered (or misread) which spell you acquired; maybe it was the Life spell Guardian Spirit, for example.

*To clarify, you can't automatically acquire the best spells with a single spell book. To receive common and uncommon spells (via exploration or diplomacy) you can get away with one spell book in a given discipline; for rare spells, two; and for very rare, at least three. This of course doesn't apply to Arcane spells, which everyone eventually learns anyway.

I think you're right -- I must not have saved the game after obtaining the spell. I probably just hit OK after choosing a save slot instead of. Thanks for the info!
You're welcome. On the plus side, if you've already acquired the spell once, then (at least during the same game) you have a shot at doing so again.
