One of the top reviews on the product page says the launcher has ads for other games for sale on GOG. I won't support a less convenient platform which tends not to receive updates in as timely a matter (with many games being outright abandoned while their Steam versions continue to be updated) if I have to suffer ads every time I launch the game, sale or no sale.

Does the latest version of CoM still have an ad-riddled launcher?

When I call up the launcher there are 2 Slitherine ads with links to Slitherine website.

Also there's a bar at the bottom of the launcher with the labels: "Product Page, Forum, Support". These link to the GOG website.

At the far right of that bar at bottom there are links to Slitherine Twitch, Youtube, Twitter, and Facebook.

I think that's all you'd be worried about, though I don't really get why.
You can play the game without using the launcher if you don't like it.
This is some game that isn't even out yet, despite saying 'OUT NOW'. Obnoxious. As you can see, I sold out and bought it, though. I'll just launch DOSBox direct. I don't like what this portends for future GOG releases.

This is a Slitherine thing. Not GOG.

I think you're right, but I hadn't read similar complaints of the Steam version before, so I assumed it didn't have this ugly launcher. Thanks.

No, that would be because steam users are not so uptight about such things.
You can disable the ads by blocking the launcher from the internet in WIndows Firewall.

Go to WIndows Firewall -> Advanced Settings -> New rule

Or just stop using the launcher, if it offends.

How can I launch CoM without the slitherine launcher ? I cannot find any .exe to do so.

It's a dos game that runs on the dosbox emulator so you need to do either

A. Start dosbox.exe, then navigate to the game's folder and start it using DOS commands
B. Make a dosbox conf file that does that for you and a desktop icon that launches it.

B is easier and the game does come with the proper conf file so all you need to do is to launch dosbox with the parameter that tells it to use that conf file and maybe edit the commands at the end of the file to mount and launch from the correct location. (I actually don't have the GoG version but in the other two, there are two conf files for some reason, you might need to put the lines in the second one into the conf file you're planning to use, not sure.)

This is how my desktop icon to start the game looks like
Target :"C:\Games\Master Of Magic\DOSBOX\dosbox-74-debug.exe" -conf dosboxmom.conf
Start in : "C:\games\Master Of Magic"

Of course you have to enter the folder and filenames of your actual files but you can safely move them to any folder you want.

i noticed the sys req of MOM is now only for Windows 8 and 10? i guess because of the stupid CoM patch. what the heck.i know the original version 1.31 is buggy but why include what's essentially a fanmade mod?
and from what i read from reviews, the paid version of CoM is incompatible with GOG's version. what?!?
CoM and MoM are both DOS games run in the dosbox emulator. They have no system requirements, if you can run dosbox, you can run the games.

The installers and launcher Slitherine added though might require windows 8, I'm not sure.
CoM being "incompatible" is also some sort of an installer or DRM problem.
Once you manage to get past those problems, the game itself, with or without the mod, is portable and can be played on any computer that runs Dosbox.
