I seem to remember that back in the days of last millennium, with the last Simtex update, I could find books or retorts that the AI Wizards had when defeating their Fortress. Not sure if just those they had found themselves as Treasure, or including some they started with, or if it was when the AI Wizard was permanently defeated, but I'm certain that I could in some cases loot books and retorts, not just spells.

Playing with the community patched GoG version doesn't seem to allow for this to happen, whether defeating temporarily or permanently, original picks or found loot (I've beaten AI which clearly had more stuff than they began with). Am I just remembering this wrong and that you never could get retorts and books except from high-level lairs and nodes?

Thanks!

You can get up to 2 spells if you banish/defeat a wizard by capturing their capital (the city with their wizard tower in it), assuming that they know spells you can learn but don't have yet. For example, if you have all Nature books and banish a wizard with all Death books, you probably won't get anything unless they know some Arcane spells you don't know.

You can't get retorts or spell books when banishing a wizard. Those can only come from high end nodes/ruins.

Caveat to my answer: I'm mostly just familiar with the base/1.31 version from GOG, not the Community Patch or Caster of Magic versions. However, I haven't heard about any differences in this regard.
