Majesty Gold looks really cool, but the store page said it only had so and so amount of missions. I dont much play these type of games for the campaign, so is there a skirmish/freeplay sort of mode?

Yes, it does.
It does indeed, and a damn good skirmish mode.
Majesty 2 is a different story......
Majesty 1 is an far more refined and complete feeling game than part 2.
Where in Maj1 your subjects emulate decent individuals in posession of common sense and avoid performing ridicilous things(in general), your heroes handle like an ragtag group of Mmorpg noobs in Maj2. The game in general took a turn becoming mmoish as every hero can be revived at the graveyard for an fee, instead becoming permanently lost upon death, unless you had an mausoleum for the most decorated of your heroes as in Maj1.

The AI of your heroes is mostly flawed, evidenced in their preference wandering about idly "seeking adventure" instead reacting to attacking monsters or reward flags. There are cases where an Cleric hero would have oneshot the attacking veteran skeleton using her holy strike spell, but instead she choose to turn around and flee instead due to the way the fear aura of said skeleton works, or rather due to how fear has been coded to work in this game.
It doesnt help that functions that were performed automatically in Maj1, such as heroes grouping together require manual setup in Maj2. Besides much of the content in Majesty 1 is entirely missing in Maj2, such as the ability to gamble, the library, fairgrounds and hall of champions buildings, the sorcerers tower and its amazingly useful repertoire of spells, or any mechanic of town portalling for your heroes.
Many crucial functions of Maj1 are missing, such as being able to take an building out of the repair queue or canceling/putting on hold an buildings construction. This means much frustration in missions where multiple Ancient Guardtowers have to be built, as you cant tell the peasants when to start construction. The process begins immediately upon discovery of the foundation even as high level monsters such as several dragons are wandering the area! Much to your frustration if you happent to be unlucky enough to uncover all six foundations at once, will have to evidence one peasant hammering at the foundation each, instead all of them conveniently building one and then proceeding to another next.
The spell quick access bar gets ordered in a fixed order in Maj1, in Maj2 they are ordered by time of research, also it tends to be throughstrewn instead heals and resurrect, protection, damage dealing spells appearing conveniently grouped up together sorted by their element. Also if you scroll that bar to the right to see the rest it resets back to left end almost immediately.

The campaign of Majesty 2 consists of missions where things must be performed in an exact order to win, as opposed to the freedom of choice prevalent throughout Majesty 1.
Of the expansions, Kingmaker gives the campaign that is resemblant most of Maj1 as it doesnt stress the player as much, Battles of Ardania is an mixture of freedom and strict levels.
The scenarios are of an so-so quality, none of them being truely endless. Of the highly configurable skirmish mode of Maj1 there is no trace.
After this long wall of rant and slander i shall give credit where its due, as throughout the game resides an good sense of humour. Perhaps the absurd difficulty in many of the missions was also intended to be part of that humour, however in that case it seems to be got lost on me as Majesty 2 felt rather stress inducing than the relaxation i had felt playing Majesty 1.
