This game is fighting me at every turn. I just want to be able to steer with WASD and not have to deal with the inverted mouse. I can't play this game in it's current state. I know these are the original controls, but I just can't.

Searching around the web has lead me to an assortment of dead ends, including AutoHotkey (I can't code, I don't know the first thing about it and nothing about this program makes sense or works for me in any way). I really want to enjoy Magic Carpet and I'm pretty devastated right now that I'm completely unable to.

Help?

I think that the GOG version of Magic Carpet uses DOSBox, does it not?

If so, then perhaps you could use my mapper-file: I seem to have a mapping that uses WASD tp provide forward, back, and strafing.

To get DOSBox to recognise the mapping, go to the configuration file for the game, look for the line "mapperfile=", and point it to the file.

A link to the mapping file:

Press Ctrl + F1 to open DOSBox' Mapper tool. There you click on the key that you wish to rebind, then click on "Add" and press the key you want to rebind it to. When you're done with everything, click on "Save".

To be clear: the keys displayed on screen represent the keyboard functions that are emulated, not your keyboard. So if you want to rebind Magic Carpet's forward movement to the W key, you need to click on the upward cursor on the screen, click on "Add" and then press W (making that clear because I always get it wrong first).

I recommend also rebinding the return key to TAB so you have better access to the map and spell menu.

Thaumaturge's file would presumably also work since it's the kind of file that the Mapper tool creates but it's honestly more convenient to just do the rebinding yourself. The Mapper tool is honestly pretty rad. The only thing it apparently won't allow is invert the mouse, God knows why.
