Hystorm: Greetings.
Playing this game again as I loved it when it first came out.
Using the built in DosBox or whatever its called that came with the download to play this game.
Whenever I save a game either via the P button or menu, the next time I load the game, there are no saved games.
Has anyone else seen this?
Thanks in advance.
I have, and here's the fix.
These instructions are for Magic Carpet 2. There may be differences in the other MC games.
It involves some changes to the .conf file and adding to the directory. I recommend making a copy of the .conf file for backup before making changes.
GOG.com's setup for Magic Carpet 2 is like playing off the CD only. The game doesn't expect to be able to save. The trick is to install the game to the hard drive. I don't know your skill level with directories and windows, so this might be information overload to some, and way too wordy for others. Sorry in advance.
Note: Windows usually locks files in the Program Files folder. You may need to copy the file to the desktop, edit it, then copy it back for this to work.
These files are in the Program Files\GOG.com\MC2\MC2 directory.
1. Add a new folder named "Cdrive" to the MC2 directory. It will sit along side with "data", "intro", "language", etc.
2. Using notepad, edit "dosboxMC2.conf" (remember, if it won't save, follow the above instructions)
3. At the very bottom, replace the "mount" command with these 2 mount commands:
mount c "Cdrive\"
mount d "." -t cdrom
This makes your new folder the new "hard drive" and turnes the original files into a virtual cd.
4. Replace "netherw.exe" with "nwsetup.bat" This will run the installer and setup programs.
5. Save and exit
6. Run Magic Carpet 2
Your hard drive will be setup and a program to setup your sound will open.
7. Use Sound Blaster 16 on both settings, then select DONE
8. If you see "D>" then type exit
9 Re-edit the dosboxMC2.conf file and change back "nwsetup.bat" to "netherw.exe"
10 Save and exit.
Your game is now setup as it was intended and will save properly.
Good suggestions on tweaking performance and memory (and will help stop occasional crashes) are on the reviews on GOG's MC2 page.
