And has anyone tried to petition them to release the source code?

I can think of some fairly easy changes that would greatly enhance M.A.X.: a) port to windows (7)/os x/linux b) fix the memory bug on long games, c) support arbitrary resolutions.

I believe Interplay still owns the rights to most of their games.
