You can't save to a specific point in time, basically when you die you'll go back to the nearest restart point, so if you haven't got far enough then you'll go back to the beginning. Once you get out of prison you'll restart there for a bit, after you get off citadel island restart points become more frequent. There is a wierd copy save game feature, but this is intended more as a way of backing up a game, rather than saving, and when you load it will still take you back to a restart point.
The save system of LBA 1 is really weird, it actually made me skip right to the second LBA, because I got so frustrated.
Anyway, here is a more detailed description of what you have to do if you don´t want to play through a whole map because of one little mistake:

Good luck!
Thats a pretty dumb reason to skip to LBA2, the save system isn't that weird the system is fine after you know how it works.

It depends on how much time you have to play. I barely have a few hours a week atm and I jsut dont want to spend them in the menu managing my savegames or replaying some anoying parts of the game. I know btw how the system works (see above). I just cant be bothered right now. With the upcoming term break I´ll hopefully hvae more time and patience and seeing how it doesn´t matter to me in what order I play the games (since I´ve finished both before) I can´t see anything dumb in my actions.
I guess I assumed you played the second one with out playing the original actually. Ahhh assumptions it is really unnecessary to spend heaps of time in the menu doing the whole copying save games thing though I did play it like that once but such a waste of time copying a save every major seeming scene.

Although as long as you have enough time to escape the prison then the save game system shouldn't be a problem at least thats what I think anyway.
So quick question, where exactly is the save file location? I mean the actual file itself. It should be a " . lba " file in the same directory as the game. I also have the physical CD version of the game but I wanted to buy the game off GOG.

EDIT: Nevermind, I found it. For all GOG games, as far as I know, the save files are stored here:

C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\GOG[dot]com\

This happens when you run LBA without administrator privileges... ;-)
As in, I should reinstall the game but run the installer with Admin privileges? Because the save file is one file, and reinstalling would not be an issue at all.

If it works for you then why you should mess with it? For "future" you can reinstall it or just play running it "as administrator"... but then don't forget to copy your present/old save files.
