I see that wikipedia lists this as a singleplayer & multiplayer game. Therefore, my question - is it like Baldurs Gate and IceWind Dale where one could take their party, and a friend and do cooperative gameplay through the entire campaign.

That is correct, the only difference is in Lionheart you can only control 1 character. Companions may be in multi too but im not sure. Theyre not that useful anyway.
