Wayrest: I almost bought this instantly but luckily read some previews first. The game seems to have a heavy focus on platform-jumping and relies on save points. Bad combination for me (I guess I have low tolerance for repetition).
I'd be interested to hear from anyone who's played it, particularly about whether it's savepoints-only, or has PC- style savegames. I'm not really into playing console games on my PC :)
It's checkpoint-based*. The game doesn't tell when a checkpoint has been reached, and you won't die very often, so it's hard to estimate how far apart checkpoints are, but every time I died, I was reloaded quite near the place I died, so I never had to redo much travelling.
About travelling: the levels are vast! Learn to combine jumping and using the jetpack at the peak of your jump, it's faster than running.
I've finished the game. The story is great, the textures and atmosphere effects are quite good, as is the voice acting (yeah, that's real Russian, correctly translated and spoken).
GOG doesn't mention (yet) that all the game's text is available not only in English, but also in French, Spanish, German and Russian. You can switch languages at any moment via the main menu. The game is not very long, at most 6 hours of gameplay. It's a non-violent game with a very cinematic feel to it. There are some flaws**, but it's beautiful and gripping, and creates this feeling of loneliness away from everything you used to know.
I'm glad I bought it.
*: as are many recent releases on GOG: A Story About My Uncle, Among The Sleep, this game... this seems to be a trend in modern games first/third person games.
**: lots of running, simple and repetitive puzzles, a smooth-surface heightmap landscape, and some absurd object placement (a canister of jetpack fuel right next to molten lava!).
