After a certain point in the game -- who knows what set it off -- I found the game would crash every time I tried to do damn near anything, especially anything that involves a menu item. Opening the map, opening the inventory, saving the game, quitting -- it all crashes. I can open the map if I do it by going to the ballroom entrance (my save game is inside the ballroom) and clicking in the area where your cursor changes to a ship icon. But even if I go to another area, the problem persists.

It would be nice if GOG bundled the DOS version of the game too since it's much less likely to have these kinds of issues. I had problems with the Windows version of LSL7 crashing back in the day as well, and I was hoping this rerelease would fix such issues, but I guess not. (As it happens I already have a copy of the DOS version, myself, but I imagine most users aren't so lucky.)

I should add that this problem has something to do with my save file. If I start a new game, everything is fine.
I downloaded the DOS interpreter (I think it would be nice if the GOG version came with this built in, in addition to the Windows version) and tried to load the bad autosave file in it. No dice; it refuses to. So I guess my game is hosed. Sigh.

I think you are correct. I'm currently playing this game and I just ran into the exact same problem. I got around it by loading a previously saved game from the opening menu (instead of continuing my current game). Luckily I had saved one ~10 minutes earlier. But if you've only been using the autosave then I think you are stuck.
Have to repeat what 01kipper said, though I was not as lucky and had roughly a half hour to 40 minutes since my last save and had to repeat a lot of stuff. Best advice I can give is to save your game every 5-10 minutes so that if you end up getting the crash conditions, you have a clean game to return to and not much ground to make back up. Hopefully an 'official' solution will come up at some point.
`There is a save game bug that if you save more the 5-10 time then it breaks the game.
