So far, I am disappointed with how they packaged the first Larry game:

Alt-x doesn't work. Can't skip the damn quiz. Learned that was because GOG used Scumm VM instead of DOSbox. Why?

Can't save the game whenever you want. Whenever I try to save my game, a window appears claiming that the saving slots are for auto-saves only..... What the hell did they do to the game?

And these problems were not fixed by the new patch update. Aren't they paying attention at all?
At least using a standalone copy of DosBox should still work...
If you save on any other slot but the first one, it should save just fine.

I agree, I am also a little disappointed by this. DOSBOX is by far a better solution. I went ahead and manually created a DOSBOX emulation, because the SCUMMVM version was just annoying. Just had to tweak a few settings in the DOSBOX config file, but at least now I have a better running Larry 1
