I'm having exactly the same problem as Borbin. This may be a bug. I read a Walkthrough that says that throwing the knives closes the pits in front, but that's not my case.

EQUIP, then ATTACK with a throwing weapon so that the attack goes through the teleport. THROWN objects fly only 3 squares/tiles; attacks fly until they hit something.

They got a lot further if you attack instead of throwing manually, but they don't have infinite range. Get yourself into a long hallway and throw one. It'll hit the ground. Arrows and thrown weapons both do this.
