I still can't hear the Windows shutdown sound, even with headphones - but I do remember something else: as part of the background noises, besides wailing and whispering and other things, there are sometimes some faint chimes on the wind.

They don't sound anything like the windows sounds to me, but maybe combined with other things, they do to you?

It's there, it's kinda, echoish, sounding as if it was coming from the next room.

Well, i've heard that precise moment more than a couple of times now, so, a combination would be unlikely, i think it's just part of the ambient soundtrack.
I should note that I heard the sound in that video you linked, but I have never heard it in my game at all.
I've heard this sound quite a lot - I fought at first it was my housemate having issues with his laptop, and turned off my speakers to see if he needed help lol.

It's faint though, as you said, a faint chime seemingly coming from another room. If you play with earphones you'll notice it is part of the soundtrack, and plays not long after a series of louder chimes and voices can be heard. But yeah, it's funny how it sounds like an XP sound!
I just forget about it now, it was probably unintentional and if you keep thinking that a monster is using an oldish OS deep in the dungeons, well you'll probably ruin a bit of the atmophere!
You're not crazy at all since I hear it as well sometimes. And really, I was sure it was my GF's computer until I read this thread. So it's actually the game, yes... which would explain that I only hear it when I play Grimrock.

I guess that the developers inadvertly captured that sound while recording something else. Hope they patch it.
Well now I'm the one who feels crazy, haha

I swear I've listened to this clip about 50 times off and on for the past day and I can't seem to hear it.

I must really be getting old or something

edit: Though I guess I haven't tried with headphones yet... don't actually have any currently available to me. I'm telling myself that's why i can't hear it. ;-P

I had to press my headphones against my ears to hear it, but yeah, that is the XP shutdown.

Crazy, I'm sure it's intentional, they probably wanted to make people think they were going crazy from the eerie ambient music.

Luckmann: Yeah, I also hear it, but I must say that until you pointed it out, I had no idea. Kudos for catching that. I'm a bit envious of your hearing - or at least your soundset.

Arteveld: Onboard SoundMAX ADI1988 + Creative Inspire P5800? Oh, come on.;)
It's a funny thing, because i catch small stuff like this, but many friends still call me 'deaf', because i didn't hear them calling me.
I used to get that a lot. For a very long time, I thought I had hearing problems, because I constantly didn't "catch" what people said to me, especially in crowded rooms and so on. Then one day I had my hearing checked as part of the military examination thing we used to have in Sweden, and it turns out that my hearing isn't just good, it's exceptional, and I scored as high as it was possible.

Now when I'm getting a bit older and due to some other issues I'm having, I suspect that I've just got ADHD or similar, crippling my attention and making it hard for me to actually listen to what people are saying unless I concentrate.

Turns out there's nothing wrong with my hearing.
I just don't care what people have to say. :D

Arteveld: You can hear it in game, but also, in this vid around 2:45.
Odd that you comment on only that sound :P
There is a whole chime a few seconds before that ;)

In that youtube video:
0:17-0:20 chime & 0:29 single.
2:34-2:37 chime & 2:45 single.
(I know the gap is 1 second different between the chime and the single, but a bit hard to tell the exact time when watching on youtube.)

If it happends more often then that I'm not sure about. Might be a bit hard to hear when there is fighting.

Cool tests, back when they used to do the checkups for military here, they just looked at the hair and scars and they sent You on Your marry way. Never bothered to chek my ears.
Gotta say, i'm 28ish and i still hear those high pitched tones, like those cell phone ring tones that the 'elderly' can't hear. Though the sound here is not really that high, it's just muddy. While ADHD wasn't known back when i was younger, my father was diagnosed with something autism'ish with a hint of OCPD, which is probably what i've got. That might be wht i'm touchy on the subject of details, like that bloody chime. A sharp ear is a curse, You just can't enjoy anything.

Kinda, reminds me catching that drum f..kup in Judas Priest's "Painkiller". I loved that track to death, now i can't listen to it without being irritated by that "oh, f..k, i slept through it" moment.:D

Well, i heard it in game, and then desperately tried to find in in some YT vid, and after a few manic fast forwards i found it in that clip, at 2:45, But yeah, it;s at 0:29 too. the 0:17 and 2:34 are different chimes, and they don't bother me, it's really all about it sounding way too close to the XP shutdown sound.;)

Now, i don't want to sound evil, but i found a LoG extractor [thank You, Chech programmers!], and got the ambient.ogg file, and i can assure You guys, it's there at 1:08 of that track. I guess it's just a coincidence, but damn, it's just way to close to the XP sound for me. Don't get me wrong, it's not throwing me away from the game, i'm loving every single grid of it, it's just making me take off my headphones and look around a bit too often. :)

People just have different hearings ;)
I'm 36 years old and I hear it very well without headphones each time the ambient loop comes to that sound. Be happy that you can't hear it... it's quite annoying.
See, I can hear the 'chime' noises and whatnot but I guess I don't think they sound like the Windows XP shutdown noise specifically. What I'm hearing in the ambient track has a slower tempo and fewer individual tones.
Funny thing: After reading this post and hearing the sound after several tries on youtube, I actually heard a windows xp error sound while playing a few minutes ago.

Completely agree, I can hear what your talking about but they are different tones from the windows XP shutdown.
I run a pretty good sound system on my PC. One of the audio loops does indeed play the Windows XP log off sound. It's audible at practically all sound levels, from low to high. It seems like the recording of one of the suspect sound loops was contaminated ^^
