This game seems to be loaded with secrets, it could be that the earthquakes do something more than add ambiance...who knows?? That's why this game has got me hooked. There's still this door I never figured out how to open on level 3...there's no hint next to it or anything and no key hole, I had to just let it go. It's right after that little puzzle with the 2 teleporters circling the room.
So far I've found normal to be a little too easy and I just got to level 4 so are well acquainted with the spiders. Haven't even needed to sleep yet but that won't last much longer.

Hope the difficulty increases but I am loving the experience so far.
I take back what I said, level 4 really ramps up the difficulty at places >_< damn does it get hard suddenly!
Wait for the slimes and giant crabs...

The slimes guarding certain early secret zone in hard are near impossible by the time you reach them, unless you're coming back from deeper levels where they are actually more common. And even so, the way that particular room is designed... *shivers*

That room is awesome. Takes so much planning to get through it without needing to constantly go back and rest.

I got stuck between two slimes and died horribly the first time. And you know what? I haven't enjoyed dying so much since Cave Story...
Just one question about difficulty. I'm guessing fight are harder, but anyone know what else is harder? Is there more mobs? Is there fewer loot, food etc.?
I thought so, till I ran into one of those nasty little poison spitters in a narrow passage. After that, I was pretty happy with choosing normal. ;)

Correct me if Im wrong, Ive only played the first 4 levels but as far as i can tell, only the monsters stats are affected by difficulty mode. So puzzles, items and monster count all seem to remain unaffected.

edit: items that you pick up from the enviroment that is, I dont know if monsters loot tables changes with difficulty..

How difficulty level compares to Dungeon Master and Eye of the Beholder 2? Is it harder or easier than these two games? Or maybe at same level?

Ineresting game but too high difficulty level is always turn off.

I haven't finished the game yet but getting close and I would say Dungeon Master is a much harder game. Grimrock certainly has it's moments but if you are skilled with movement and plan ahead then you should be fine. The only time you will really die is when you muck up and get yourself horribly cornered.

BeorntheBear: I experienced an earthquake on Level 2, so it is possible you found a key you happened to miss. Did anyone else find a golden key on Level 3 without an earthquake?
I got mine from a spider.
Just finished the game, and I can only say that the game isn't actually that difficult as long as you get to fight where you want, instead of wherever you find the enemies. While there are some rooms that are actually quite challenging, most of the enemies you'll find are roaming around, so you can pretty much pull them one by one to a previously cleared room.

If you're playing in hard, the same system still works, but mobs will hit harder and will take longer to kill. Yet, as long as you can dance around them is alright.

However, in those rooms you can't really choose where to fight, that often involve either many enemies and a poor starting position (flanks and back exposed) or a very annoying layout (pits, mostly, but also corridors where enemies come from both sides) hard difficulty really makes the game A LOT harder. Because those situations are already quite hard to deal with in normal, mostly. And of course, enemies such as the slimes or some ranged casters are going to be a total pain in the ass.
