I'm kind of sick of fantasy games having races that are really just humans with minor alterations(pointy ears, short stature, green skin, etc) :D And this game has minotaurs, lizardmen, insect people... I like that all races are appearance wise too different and not just humans! It kind of makes having different races pointless when only difference between them is one minor feature and stats :P
I too am impressed with the variety... but I still made a party composed entirely of humans.
Still nice to have option xD
Insectoids are actually the ones standing out here; Minotaurs and Lizardmen aren't that rare in older RPGs.
Insectoids are a lot like Thri-Kreens of Dark Sun, so they aren't that rare too ;-)

Always nice when an RPG offers races other than the usual fantasy fare such as elves, dwarves, hobbits, and gnomes, I like having exotic or strange characters.

They are old games but Wizardry 6&7 have several different characters that are none of the above. Dogs, cats, dragons and lizards.
I'm fairly certain I had a dragon as a party member in my playthrough of one of the Might and Magic games.

But yeah, the races in Grimrock are very cool. Keep in mind that it's much easier to create exotic races in games where you do not actually need to model and animate any members of said races.

Might and Magic 8. Was a terrible game in an otherwise great franchise.

I liked it. :P I'm gonna make it a point to play through the rest of the series to discover how much better they are.

Nor have them talking/being talked to xD

Start with Might and Magic VII. M&M 7 was probably the best of the series. You will hear differently from some but I think that is mostly nostalgia talking. M&M 7 did so much more with that M&M 6/7/8 engine than was done with 6 or 8.

And it also had nonhuman races(unlike 6) ;)
Dungeon Master: Chaos Strikes Back had an assortment of odd characters to choose from. Lizardmen, insectoids, even the four horsemen of the apocalypse were there.
