First my PC if that is useful
Alienware M11x Gaming Laptop
Windows 7 64bit

Soul Reaver doesn't start sometimes. I get a small Menu to choose the DRIVER, RESOLUTION, SOUND DRIVER and if I want FILTER TEXTURES.
When I click "OK" it says that Kain2 doesn't work any more and checking for solutions (did this ever have some use to anybody?)

After restartig my PC one, or sometimes even more times, it starts, but there is the possibility that the Game crashes. This happened to me two times while I was fighting and using objects as Weapons but it does not always crashes wenn I use them, so maybe a coincidence. After that it goes to the not-even-starting-problem again.

Does anyone have a solution for this?

What I tried so far:
reinstalling the Game
Windows 95, 98 and XP Service Pack 2 and 3 compatibility mode.

Update: Now doesn't even restarting the Computer help anymore.

It simply doesn't start at all for me, the kain2.exe sits in task manager and nothing ever happens.
This may not do anything, I'm just grasping at straws here. But try this.

1. Uninstall the game completely, make sure to check and verify the folder is completely gone.

2. Reinstall and don't select any compat mode at this time just keep it default for now "run as admin" may be good idea though.

3. When you get the initial box for the driver/resolution etc. First try booting it with your video driver selected.

4. If that fails go back in there and select Software Mode and try booting it that way.

If all fails I would copy the crash file that gets created in the soul reaver folder when the game crashes "crashinf" and send that along with your specs and such to GOG support they may have more suggestions or fixes.

This may not help you at all, just a though of what I would try.

This is an old thread but i'd like to add my m11x will also not reliably run Soul Reaver, Soul Reaver 2, or Blood Omen 2. They'll start up randomly (maybe 1 out of 5 times), then usually crash a bit later. Defiance however seems to works fine. I've tried many different combinations of options to solve the problem but nothing seems to work. If an m11x is your only gaming rig I don't recommend buying these games.

Edit:

After testing on 3 more rigs I don't recommend anyone buy SR1, SR2 or BO2 unless they have an old PC laying around, my old Athlon XP rig with WinXP is the only one they even start up on. Out of 150 games from this site I haven't had as much trouble as i've had with the games in this series.

The same thing is happening to me.
