Defiance is unable to initialize. It suggests that I insert the original disc in my CD drive before attempting to initialize. This is a GOG release. Any known workaround?

Try changing the compatibility options, right click game shortcut then compatibility tab. If that doesn't work you can also try installing to your main C: drive if you installed the game to another hard driver other than your main C: drive.

Thanks. Tried the above...still no go. Can you please check all registry entries made by the game during installation when convenient. The only other windows device I have is a company laptop that does not allow software installation. Greatly appreciate the help
As I know, there is one dependence of Defiance on the registry. Exactly, on this parameter:
[HKLM\SOFTWARE\Crystal Dynamics\Legacy of Kain: Defiance\1.00.000]
"FullInstall"=dword:00000001
With this one the game seeks movies in the folder movies, without it - on the CD (or in the root folder).

Also the correct nocd-patch for Defiance is this one:
<Change offset="0xC0A5C" from="08" to="00">
check this address in exe file using hex editor.

I added the dword as suggested, am still unable to bypass the error. My gaming computer is not connected to the internet so haven't been able to download a hexeditor..will revert with findings as soon as I get the opportunity. Meanwhile was wondering if there's a registry entry that explicitly specifies the path to the game..please let me know when possible. Thanks.
Wrace is right. Game ask for CD exactly cause this one reg entry. Try to manually edit it (FullInstall=1) in REGEDIT. Make sure that if you have x64 OS path is a little differ.

Reinstall it from offline installer "as admin" to path like X:\Games\Legacy-of-Kain-Defiance\ and set "run as admin" to game exe. GOG installer should put correct reg entry. If you manually copy-paste it pre-installed from other PC than you should put that one registry entry.
Thanks, QWEEDDYZ.

About fix for registry - note that the path contains HKLM (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE), not HKCU (HKEY_CURRENT_USER). This is the exact reason why gog's installer can't add this string into registry without running the game's installer with admin rights.

About absence of internet connection on the gaming PC - now there are USB flash drives, so you can download hex editor from the internet using another PC, copy it onto USB flash drive and then use it on your PC without internet connection.

I think I overlooked that detail. Will see and revert on how that goes.

Am currently connected to the internet through my phone, an apple tab and an ironclad company laptop. We browsed on a common PC but the PSU's burnt during lockdown..So that's where hexedit is :)

Silent storm is the only other game I can play. I don't do replays but now have started looking up completed titles on the DVD shelf out of desperation. I will probably move my gaming PC by this weekend to address this.

The registry tweak didn't work. However, the game did launch after reinstalling. I didn't try the hex edit though.
