I'm running the game in windows 98/ME compatibility mode to prevent crashes but now the FMV cut-scenes stutter and are out of sync with the sound.
Running the game in a different compatibility mode or without it at all returns the FMV to normal but then I get the crashes.

Any advice?

The only (partial) solution that I know is increasing the process priority. It doesn't completely fix the issue but it still makes a huge difference. You can make a batch file to make it permanent.

Thank Paradoks. Turns out it wasn't really a big deal. There are only a couple of FMV scenes that play during the game.
