Whenever I try to start LOL3 it turns the colors into 8bit and then prompts for the game CD, clicking OK just closes the dialog for a moment before being presented again.

My only possible explanation I can think of is that I had the retail version of LOL3 installed before (yes, I actually own the original physical game), but I've removed it since. No effect on the game working though, and I can't find anything in registry.

Besides disabling UAC I don't see I have much options how to solve this myself, but I don't really see UAC as the problem (I've yet to encounter even one game that had issues with Win7's UAC).
I have the same problem as you, I even contacted GOG about and any of the help they sent didnt help.

All the other games i have from GOG have worked great, so I am thinking its just this game that has the problem.

I too have the retail version but not installed on comp, so thats not the problem.

I personally think there is a problem with the game, would be interesting to know how many other people have had problems with this game
I haven't really done anything new except update video card drivers to latest version, but the game seems to work now. I don't really believe the driver update is relevant, but it's the only change since the game didn't work.

Hope it stays that way though.

Edit: There's still odd issue with the game claiming I don't have enough video memory (there's 2GB of it >_>) whenever it's loading, which is odd but doesn't seem to be doing anything hurtful unless it's supposed to be displaying something useful.

Ok, found a possible solution/explanation.

The installer creates two shortcuts for the game, one regular shortcut, and another in the games explorer or whatever. The latter link doesn't work, same for launching the game directly via lol3.exe, but the other regular shortcut works.

The only difference it has for the games explorer and direct lol3.exe launching is that it has some extra command-line parameters: LOL3.EXE -CD. -16MB -NO_ASSERTS

I'm fairly sure I launched the game via that few times before too, but I'm now consistently reproducing failure and success depending if I launch the game via that shortcut or directly. Anyway, problem solved I guess.
might give it another try myself, hopefully i can get it to work this time
