Sometimes in Lands of Lore 2 there is a brief white flash around Luther's portrait in the corner, similar to what happens during transformations, and with a completely different sound effect. These seem to happen in specific places, one instance being right after you visit the blacksmith in the Huline Jungle for the first time. Does anyone have any idea what these flashes signify?

I believe those are spots where Luther is always transformed back into his human form.
