This is simply amazing. I cannot believe what a wonderful Christmas Gift I've found for myself here!
I remember playing BaK on various PCs throughout the years, only recently discovering amazing CD audio sound. I've never finished the game, the farthest I've managed was last chapter (couldn't locate The Six, no wonder since my English was subpar back then and had no Internet).
I also remember the pains to make the game work (with BootDisk, not to mention Betrayal in Antara that was crashing every 5 mins or so).
And now, after all those years thanks to GoG team I can relive this beautifully crafted game, the type that was forgotten in times of mass-market, children-targeted gaming industry.
I mean seriously, BaK has it all - equipment that deteriorates, food that needs to be taken care of, amazing plotline, free-to-roam world, need to rest, illness', various environments from dungeons to other planes, puzzles, picklocking and most of all - simply incredible text descriptions. I laugh now when someone mentions this or that RPG and goes "oh that game is awesome, so much work has been put into it", where in BaK I click on bloody Food Rations and I've got a page-long sub-story about how the food looks and smells like. Combat instances are varying, same as combat finish...
I cannot fathom how deep this game is and why that style of game-making is now extinct. I mean I know - it's cheaper to release staple-bugged half products that have to be patched over the years by fans (Gothic 3 I'm looking at you!) or put 80% of the budget into marketing (abominable Bethe$da "games"), but seriously - imo only Torment and Fallout 2 can come close to the masterpiece that Betrayal At Krondor is.
All this bollocks about BaK being freeware and all - you people are ignorant idiots, that's all. 4.99 for legal, click&play combo pack of BaK and BiA that works flawlessly under Win 7 and you still moan? You don't deserve BaK then, go and play Failout 3 and stop wasting our time.
And the icing on the cherry - my new 23'' widescreen that is also a TV has been ridiculed by my friends ("you overpaid, could just buy a monitor for half of that price and it would be better") has this option of changing picture size from 16:9 to 4:3 - so I have flawless visual and sound under Win 7 fullscreen, 640x480!)
I cannot describe how happy I am, that I can immerse myself in the world of Betrayal At Krondor on this Christmas holiday time, been playing overnight and just finished chapter one.
Thank you GoG once more, all the best to you, Merry Christmas and have a marvellous New Year full of profit.
Peter.
