i'd like to play using mouse and WSAD instead of the arrow keys.

I tried using AHK, but for some strange reason it doesn't work as intended. Pressing any of the WSAD using commands like A::Send {Left} results in a press doing nothing, but holding the key down for a second or more makes me take not one, but several steps.

So for some reason AHK isn't working in this instance.

Well I'm a month and a half late, but I thought I would mention that DOSBox has a custom keymapper. You can get to it with CTRL-F1. It's a smidge confusing, so I won't go over it, but I will say I've remapped keys in a few games. I can't think of any reason why a WASD keymap wouldn't work.

i tried that too, it had the exact same effect. i now know significantly more about AHK than i did back then. i'll wager i can get it working as intended now. however i have so many games, i haven't picked this game back up yet. been playing terraria and all
This is even later than the previous reply, but the DOSBox key mapper does work if you remove the mappings which already exist for WASD; the disadvantage here is that you cannot type those letters for saved game names unless you map them back to other keys.

I'd love to attach my mapper file for you, but the software is complaining "Wrong file format" even though it's text...

Hmm, programmers for dosbox should offer two or more different keymaps, with a way to toggle between them. It would make it a tad more convenient to have default keymap for typing save games, and such; and a advanced keymap for people who want a specific layout.
