(Minor spoilers ahead)
So, I'm in Chapter 8, in Betrayal t Krondor, and there's an area (the whole SW part of Timirianya) that kills the party if it sets foot in it (because there's a magic barrier around it). Now the party's looking for Gamina, and the Keeper of the Gates (sorry, can't recally what exactly he's called) advised it to search through the Southern half of the region for magic things to help find the girl.
However, there's a problem. Whenever I get the party to that "death zone" (wchich, by now, should be harmless), the game freezes. Every time. And it doesn't matter which way they're approaching from.
As I recall from an earlier play-through of mine (which was some 3-4 years ago, though), Gamina isn't exactly in the SW area, but they'll need *something* from there. This means that, because of the freeze, I can't complete this chapter, and, as a consequence, the game.
Does anybody know of such hangs, and what I should do about it? Or should I just send a message to support? (If I can't get an answe here, I'll just do that anyway.)
EDIT: I've tried turning the sound/music off, BTW.

This question / problem has been solved by baldbullimage
What type of windows do you use?
I use Windows XP SP3.

I had a similar problem in this chapter, but on my setup (Windows Vista) game crashed and automatically closed dosbox window whenever I get to death zone.
Luckilly I found a solution - game worked fine in map view. I was able to get to the place where drain strenght spell is hidden, than change to 3d view, take scroll, change back to map view, and get my ass from this area as far as possible:)

Thank you for your suggestion, it actually worked!
So back in the day me and my older brother bought this Betral in antara for win 95, 98, 2k, and XP. We had the disks, cd and the game ran fine. Well up to end of chapter 8 right before Ch 9 starts when we got an error about corruption and had to click ok to close game. after lots of research and downloading patches online still game would crash. We tried replaying entire game after patching and still crashed. It was aggravating to say the least because it would save right after the video and had to play entire chapter over or start a new game. Has anyone beat the entire game from the gog download? Also saw a bunch of reviews saying Ch4 crashes now. Was that ever fixed?
I did finish the game with the GOG version, and I haven't encoutnere that other crash in Ch4.
EDIT: Sorry, I meant in BaK.

The more recent version of the BiA download has the Ch 4 crash patched out. I don't know whether they've fixed the Temple of Henne issue in Ch1/2, but those were the two major problems noted with the initial release.

This thread is about BaK, not BiA
@gnarbrag
It wasn't Garran who didn't notice that - drkelfdrizzt posted a comment/question about BiA in the first place...
I am so glad I found this. I was having the same problem. Hopefully this solution works for me too.

If anyone is interested, I was using Boxer and getting the message "Reboot Requested, Quiting Now"

So if anyone else has this problem, I initially still had difficulty when I went from the overhead map to the 3d view. I had read somewhere that this problem was something to do with an interrupt or something and if you slowed the speed to 386 speed it helped. So i turned the sound off, slowed it to 386 and went to the area I needed to go to then went into 3d view and it didn't crash.

Yay. I am pretty keen to complete this game.
I just experienced this crash, was thinking the worst, not being able to finish the game after spending so much time playing. Thankfully I saw this thread. I also use Boxer and disabling sound and setting the CPU to 386 allowed me to enter the area and get the items. Whew!

Yay for us! Enjoy the rest of the game, you are almost done!

Don't mean to upvote a dead thread, but just wanted to thank you for the solution. Ran into the same bug with Boxer on my Mac, and this solution worked perfectly. For anyone who has to use this trick, here is a link to the map you'll need to find the two caches in the southwest sector:
https://web.archive.org/web/20070415012332/http://www.hi.is:80/~eybjorn/krondor/swrift.html

FWIW, I did not have to turn my cpu speed down to 386... simply navigating via the overhead map was enough.

Edit: The second time I ran into this bug I noticed it still crashed when I faced certain directions in 3D view. The solution was - for the 1st cache in the southwest sector (that is on the left side near a small hill) face directly west (the ocean) before you switch to 3D view. When you arrive at the 2nd cache in the southwest sector (the one on the right side), face directly south. Facing *any* other direction will very likely result in a crash.
