In Chapter 9, when I had to explore the mage Bryce's caves northwest of Havesly, I was confused to find a big pit close to the entrance that I couldn't cross. I searched the internet a bit, and learned you need to use some rope on the pit to cross it -- which I didn't have. Evidently this has gotten people stuck. Up to now, I don't think I needed rope for anything in the game besides one early sidequest. And strangely, at this point, the game refuses to let me travel to any town except Havesly and Dumali, neither of which has a shop that sells rope! Talk about poor game design!

Unless there's a nearby treasure chest or other storage place I missed that contains rope (I got out of the vast, boring caves beneath Sheffield Castle as soon as I could plotwise), be advised that you'll have to use the in-game cheat menu -- Ctrl-Shift-Z -- and type "supermarket for the rich" to get an inventory with rope.
As I recall, there isn't any rope available in chapter 8, either. You have to roll back to chapter 7 to buy some.

Betrayal at Krondor had a similar issue with chapter 9 and a lack of rope, although the more frequent need for it throughout the game made it less likely that someone would wander into the chapter without any.

I just ran into this problem, and for whatever reason I cannot get the Ctrl-Shift-Z text box to load. Has anyone else been unable to get the cheat dialog box to open with the GOG version of the game? I unfortunately don't have a saved game prior to Chapter 9 (lesson learned). Any suggestions? I would really like to finish the game.
Hi tapir_Bowtie, it's been months since I uninstalled the game, but I seem to recall the Ctrl-Shift-Z code as being finicky; I couldn't always get it to work, particularly in battles. Maybe it would help if you moved around and tried the code in different environments.
Is the popup to type the line not appearing or is the line itself not working?

IIRC those cheat boxes (BaK had one too) were only available while walking around, not during combat. The cheat code may be case sensitive (although if so I'm not sure what needs to be capitalized).
Thanks, LLP and Garran--I'm clearly seeing your posts very late and have since moved on to some other GOG games.

To answer your questions, the pop-up never appeared for me--I walked around and tried it a bunch of times in different areas of the map (and in combat) and never got it to work. Next time I play the game (I'm sure there will be a next time, also sure it's a few years away), I will definitely remember the rope but more importantly won't keep overwriting the same few save files!
