I'm in chapter 1 of Betrayal at Krondor and I already have a number of skill books. After reading them once on each character, they no longer have much of a effect, and I found out that I can sell them back to merchants for a lot of money. Since I don't know how the game's chapter structure works: Do I get new characters later to use these skillbooks on (and keep my inventory for that matter), or should I sell them back or should I sell them back after using them on all three characters in chapter 1?

You will get an important character, James, in chapter two, who should read all books so keeping them instead of buying them again will save you some coin. You can store one item outside LaMut under the bridge and another item outside Krondor's sewer entrance, otherwise you can take your chances by storing items in a chest, preferably a Moredhel wordlock chest.
