I have been playing PC games since the early 90s and first discovered Betrayal at Krondor in 1995, two years after it was released. Today, 15 years later, and having played numerous RPGs and other games, I must say that this title is still my favorite RPG and one of my favorite games of all time. The story, the characters, the locations, the music, and the combat system are all top notch. Even the graphics seemed amazing back in the day.

To illustrate how engaging this game is, a little anecdote: At one point I needed a root canal done. Those of you, who had a similar experience, know how painful it can be. Unfortunately it started hurting on a Friday night, and so my dentist could not see me until Monday. Over-the-counter painkillers didn't help, but I discovered that playing Betrayal at Krondor did. It simply made me FORGET about the pain.

To make a long story short, I recommend this magnificent offering to anyone who is willing to look past the outdated graphics. Betrayal at Krondor is an absolute masterpiece, and if you are only going to buy one game in the next decade, make it this game.

Well I thought that Planescape: Torment held the title of "BEST RPG Evar".
I'm currently playing through PST again (with the widescreen mod = work of art), when I finish I shall give BaK a go :)
And after that - Arcanum... oh my! A good time for rpg lovers indeed.
As an aside: I have avault.com to thank for getting me into the first Thief game - now that is THE best "first person" stealth/shooter ever! What a creepy game.

Agreed. Histant, you have good taste! :)
Back in the day, I must have clocked Betrayal at Krondor about four or five times. That was 10 years ago, and now...the charm still hasn't left. Even amongst newer RPG's; very, very few can match Betrayal at Krondor's story, characters, dialogue, atmosphere and gameplay. And the music: it's just so...appropriate. It fits perfectly, like butter on toast.
I've read Feist's work, and found myself genuinely pleased as both a fan and a gamer (though I don't recall Pug ever having a blonde mullet). Truly, one of the best games I've ever played.
