Dear Developers of Kona,
so far your game seems to be an excellent mixture of mystery and excitement all against the backdrop of the harsh Canadian North. The story is intriguing and encapsulates the vibe of tension and anticipation that many look for in games today. However, I was wondering if you had developed a backstory for the central character Carl. I was hoping I could provide some information that could help build upon anything you have already come up with. The game is fascinating and I would love to contribute in this way. Your site for the game states that it takes place is the 70s while the Facebook page for the game pinpoints it in the year 1970. Based on images of Carl, he would appear to be around 40 to 45 (please correct me if I am wrong). This would place his birth around the year 1930 give or take a few depending on his age and the date of the game. In the game, the narrator mentions that Carl was in the army at some point, but clearly he no longer is. I feel it would be very interesting and could add depth to his character for him to have a somewhat realistic backstory. If Carl was born in say 1930, he would have been of age to enlist in 1948. Due to the end of the Second World War three years prior and the passing of legislation to veterans such as the American GI bill and similar Canadian legislation, a short military career would seem like and excellent way to potentially pay for college. Carl seems to be the type of individual who would have been drawn to the Intelligence Branch. However, this can be a trick branch to get into by merely enlisting and as the Cold War had not yet begun to enter full swing was not particularly large as the War had just ended. He would have been given the survival training mentioned in the game and posted somewhere in either Canada or possibly occupied Europe. However, in June 1950, North Korea invaded South Korea starting the Korean War. Canadian Secretary of State Lester Pearson encourage Canada to respond via the UN and on August 7 1950, PM Louis Laurent authorized Canadian ground troops to enter the combat zone. The first units deployed was the 25th Canadian Infantry Brigade. This was comprised of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (Comprised mainly of Western Canadians) , a Royal Canadian Regiment (Nation Wide unit) and the Royal 22 Regiment (a francophone unit). Depending on Carl's background he realistically could have served in anyone of these untie. Seeing as he is able to read French in game it would make sense that he was either a member of the Princess Patricia's as a member of the Francophone communities in areas such as Northern Alberta or Manitoba, or as part of the 22 Regiment as a Quebecois or a eastern Canadian Francophone. Had Carl gone to Korea as a standard infantryman he would have most likely served in several battle such as the Battle of Kapyong in April 1951, where the Princess Patricia's was awarded a Presidential Unit citation by then US president Harry Truman. The 25 Brigade was involved in several battles throughout 1951 and in skirmished throughout the war. The 22 was transferred out of Korea in mid 1952 and the rest following the 1953 armistice. After serving in several battles, Carl may have been minorly wounded as he has no major injuries in game and may have picked up the smoking habit seen in game. One way or another, either due to injury or request Carl could have been transferred to the Montreal Division of the Canadian Army's Intelligence Branch (there were 6 other branches but Montreal would make the most sense if Carl was already fluent in French). The intelligence community was at the time rapidly expanding due to the Cold War now finally kicking off. Carl then could have started to gain the skills he uses as an investigator in Northern Quebec in 1970. Carl could have left the service in the mid to late 50's and used the Canadian equivalent of the GI bill to attend a University such as Toronto, Montreal or MicGill. There he could have majored in any particular major that you please, preferabley one that would continue his path to a private investigator. Carl then could have left college and gotten a job as a detective in the RCMP. There he could have served for several years until determining that he had little chance of upward mobilizer the Trudeau administration and left to pursue a career in private investigation in the mid to late 60s. Ironically, had he stayed in the RCMP, Quebecois independence terror attacks in the early 70s could have helped his stagnant career. After entering the private sector, he could have felt the global economic slowdown of the late 60s early 70s which could have hurt his career, he may have been living paycheck to paycheck taking unique jobs to pay the mortgage. This could lead him to taking up the offer of a wealthy Englishman in 1970 with the hope of scoring a few extra (Canadian) bucks. This is just a backstory that I came up with over the course of a few days and wondered what you though of it. I'm quite proud of its historical authenticity and think that it could add depth to Carl's character. Of course you fellow have ultimate say and I'll enjoy your game no matter what. Good luck on continuing to develop it.
Sincerly,
-Clark Walburger

Just wondering what your thoughts are on this idea.

Hi,

It's an interesting backstory ;)

Carl's backstory has already been written by our writer though, so we'll stick to it.

Thanks for the offer, we really appreciate :)
