So, I have scoured through the threads here and haven't found a solution to my problem. All of the other questions I saw pertained to problems once you get the game going and my problem is that I can't get the game to go whatsoever. Every single other game starts and plays without issue on Windows 8.1 except for Mask of Eternity. I click on the application to get it to start, it comes up with the dialogue box saying it's from an unknown source that I have to approve, blah blah, and then literally nothing happens. Nothing else comes up, no black screen, nothing. I have tried doing the compatibility mode and running as an administrator. I know that GOG advertises these games as running only through Windows 7, but it's kind of ridiculous to me that the older games run perfectly on 8.1 while this, the latest one, won't even run at all when I try to play it.

What am I doing wrong? This is the only game I have ever played to give me such trouble.

Wish I could help you. I haven't upgraded to Win8 because of compatibility issues like this...

You might try sending a ticket to the GOG Support?
Doesn't sound like a Windows 8 issue, does your computer have a dvd drive?

Yes, but it is external. I don't see why having a DVD drive should be an issue for only the last game and none of the others, though.

No dice, the game isn't supported by GOG on Win 8 (see here). GOG does basic testing on all games before release and when there is an issue they aren't able to solve, they officially don't support it on that platform. This might be such an issue.

Try all the usual things, like disabling UAC, set standard settings for DEP, explicitly run the game as Administrator (right-click => Run as ..), try different combinations of Compatibility settings (right-click the game's shortcut => Properties => Compatibility tab) and don't install the game into Program Files folder but into a custom folder on C: like C:\GOG Games\

You find some details on these things here.
If it is a dvd drive issue, then the basic fix is to attempt to install 'Daemon Tools' (it'll install a virtual cd drive and trick the game into loading). The game has a bug where it still looks for a CD drive, the game originally was on CD.

That bug actually is the most common issue for the game, even on Windows 7.

It's not so much a bug, but latent copy protection (DRM?) left over from the CD version.

There is actually a thread or two that discusses this, and it should be stickied :p...

WHOO! That got it to run, at least. Let's see how well that actually plays now. Thanks for the help, everyone! I'll let you know if I run across any other issues.

So much for it doesn't run on Windows 8 ;-)
Don't forget to mark Baggin's post as solution, so others can find it.
The reason it won't launch is because the executable GOG uses doesn't have the GetDriveType call patched out. If you don't want a useless virtual drive consuming resources, you can also use NicoDE's fix to that bug and the infamous TalkComplete bug that causes the game to hang.

Follow the directions in maskrt.txt
Just purchased and downloaded this game from gog onto my WIndows 8.1 machine but every time I try to launch the game I get this error -> Mask of Eternity has Stopped Working.
I downloaded the maskrt.dll file and placed it in C:\SIERRA\Maks\GAME\ but that didn't help anything. Any ideas? I'd really love to play this game again, it's been to long.

Disreguard, I placed compatibility mod to WIndows 98 and changed the graphics option in the game to,... 3D something but I don't remember what it's called.
