I'm having problems creating a new save game in KQV, it keeps saying that I have no more disk space although I clearly should have.
It sounds very similar to a problem someone else experienced with KQV (http://www.gog.com/en/forum/king_s_quest/kqv_saving_issues) and I did try to change the code, however after I open it up with notepad it doesn't seem to let me save changes to the new dosboxKQ4 file (I get a "cannot create file; make sure that the path and file name are correct" message).

If you're on Vista or Win7 you could try moving the file you're trying to edit to your desktop, edit it and save it there, and then place it back where it belongs.
Yes I am on Vista and that has helped me edit and save it. However, it seems like the code doesn't work for me at all as if I put in "sierra.exe c:\resource.cfg" the game doesn't even start... I presume that it requires some different sort of code. Given that I am meant to put the code in front of "resource.cfg" and I don't even see it in the file, I am sure I am doing something wrong.
p.s. as you may have guessed, I am DOS code illiterate so please bear with me...
The code you're refering to from the other thread is to fix a quirk with KQV, i'm not sure if KQIV has a similar quirk or not, or if those changes can be applied to KQIV.
So, you should probably undo any changes you made to the file to get the game working again.
Regarding the error when you try to save, when it pops up doesn't it offer an option to change the directory where the saves are stored ? I don't have any of the KQ games so i can't check this at my end.
You can also try to tick the 'Run as Admin' checkbox on the KQIV shortcut in case that message that comes up when you try to save is being caused by a permissions issue.
Right click the shortcut > Properties > Switch to the 'compatibility' tab > tick the 'Run as Admin' checkbox

It did seem very similar to what happened in that topic and there was also a resource.cfg file in the KQ4 folder, hence why I tried out that code.
I tried to run it as an admin and it seems to work now... Thanks!
No problem, i'm glad it worked.
