When I try to launch the game nothing happens!
I have tried to reinstall as well as run the game as administrator and other compability modes, but nothing seems to help.
I run in win10 and have all the updates needed.
You need a CD-ROM drive, even virtual drive will do the trick. An inserted medium is not required.

Else use the KQMoE Shim (kqmoefix) and/or extract the game files ("play from disk") to disable the CD-ROM check.
Both can be found here: http://kqmoe.nicode.net/

If you have an old computer (Windows 7 or older), you can try launching it on that. It doesn't seem to do well with newer systems. If not, don't worry. If you can't play this game, most people would agree that you aren't missing much
Ignore the advice from cbingham. His opinions doesn't help anything and the game works perfectly fine on newer systems, like Windows 10. Nicode's advise should do the trick

Okay I've used the guidelines and downloaded both zipfiles of the patch and placed them in the Kings quest 8 fodle in the galaxy client section of the directory.

Game still crashes if I try to start a new game or watch the intro.

"kqmoevol" wont even load up.... Help me out here everyone.

I know this game isn't well liked by alot of people but from the video footage I've seen I've played worse and it's going to be my first time so I might enjoy it for one run.
1a) Download the http://svn.nicode.net/kqmoefix/bin/kqmoefix.zip (archive password is "kqmoefix" - without the quotes) and extract the kq8fix.exe to the game directory (where the Mask.exe is).
1b) Run the kq8fix.exe and enable the patch for the Mask.exe (check the item in the list).
1c) Close the kq8fix.exe.

2) Download the http://kqmoe.nicode.net/kqmoeavi-en.zip and extract the re-encoded videos to the game directory (where the Mask.exe is).

3a) Rename the glide2x.dll in the game directory to something else (e.g. glide2x_.dll).
3b) Install the current version of nGlide (1.05) from http://www.zeus-software.com/downloads/nglide

4a) Download the http://svn.nicode.net/kqmoevol/bin/kqmoevol.zip (archive password is kqmoevol" - without the quotes), extract the kqmoevol.exe and the kqmoepfd.cmd the to the game directory (where the Mask.exe is).
4b) Run the kqmoepfd.cmd (double click in the Windows Explorer)

See http://kqmoe.nicode.net/#kqmoefix for creating debug logs that might help finding the reason for the crash.

Thank I'll give this a try later but not any time soon im a bit annoyed having to keep on using fan patches and all kinds of things for these old games I own :(.
I'm working on a rewrite of kqmoefix (might be finished at the end of this year) that includes all the steps in one application.
(kqmoefix is mainly intended to be used for the official demos and releases, but I try to keep it working with the GOG release)

However, (1) and (2) is recommended, but (3) and (4) are completely optional. You can use the DirectDraw or Direct3D mode and (beyond the saved game loading performance) there is no need to extract the game files.

Switching the graphics mode (DirectDraw, Direct3D, 3Dfx) or resolution still has some issues (the workaround is not yet included in the public version of kqmoefix). So it might be easier to change the settings directly in the Options.cs (the values for assignGModeName are Software, D3D-display, and Glide).

Hummm... I have tried points 1 and 2, but the game still crashes if I try to view the intro, or start a new game.

I am running a i7 with 32 gigs of RAM on Win10, with a GTX 1080.

Oh well I was able to run the game after all.
I had it installed in: D:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\Kings Quest 8
I re-installed it in: D:\games\Kings Quest 8

And it works! I really tried to re-install it where I had it installed in the first place.
But it doesn't work. It seems there was something wrong with the path.

With that said, I can play the game, but it still crashes a lot.
Everytime I go into the menus, when I try to go back to the game, it crashes. :(
IIRC the install path is limited to ~40 characters, else the game might crash with a buffer overflow while building the complete filenames. A generic fix for all KQ8 versions isn't that easy, sorry.

You really should install a current version of nGlide and rename the glide2x.dll in the KQ8 game folder to actually use it.
I used the "games" folder and had the same issue, and installing the nGlide did not do anything to help the issue with crashes after leaving the main menu at all
is the KQMoA the best fan patch?

Tried the game. Runs like single digits and videos don't work.

Im trying this fix now.

Even if it doesn't work I appreciate the time that went into making it.

Hey thanks man! That did the trick for me, only I had to rename glide 2 back to it's original or I just got a black screen (even though the game booted). I didn't need to install Nglide since I already did that a few days prior for another game I wanted to play. Strange thing though is that I can only run it about about 10-13 fps.... which is after choosing 3DFX and 800x600. Perhaps I should try direct 3D or something but then I can only play at 600x480 or something (I remember that limitation from the old days when I used to play on a tnt2 or geforce 2gts, even the special effects couldn't be selected).

Other than that, the person saying the game isn't worth playing.... well.... it's not a looker, and most certainly a huge departure from VII, but once you get into it for an hour or so you get into an incredible adventure, I remember crossing the river stix, making it through the trials of hell and confronted the demon sitting at his throne (can't remember if that was the devil or just the keepseeker of the underworld, I believe it was Horus actually).

Then my basement flooded and my pc was broken, together with all my music files and gone were years of efforts and songwriting... I actually rescued an old hard drive by dismanteling it and putting it in another case this year and was able to save some tracks and recreate 4 songs out of like 26-35 that were written and recorded and this year I released that very EP of my 16 year old recordings and got it labeled worldwide.... hah, how a game can bring up memories :)

Now back to the issue at hand, any fix to make it run smoother?

Thanks!
