Running Win8.1.1x64, and I'm jumping through hoops to get this game (KQ8) to run credibly well through someone's Glide wrapper. nGlide 1.02 is very good for running Lands of Lore 2 DOS and many other DOS Glide games (with dosbox-svn-daum)--but it stinks at running KQ8 in W8.1.1x64. Frame-rate slows to a crawl in just a couple of minutes and then locks up. But I'm having no better luck with Dege's dgVoodoo 2.3 or Zeckensack's Glide Wrapper .84c.

I also wonder if there's a way to run more than one glide wrapper at the same time in a single system--I don't see how that might work, though. So if I can find a wrapper that will handle KQ8 well enough to allow me to play the game (D3d isn't happening), I'll have to uninstall my system-wide DOS wrapper, but then reinstall it to play the games that the other KQ8 wrappers don't handle.

I noticed that Zeckensack just put out a new version today, 2.31, so I'll download that and give it a whirl. I wouldn't mind doing away with nGlide, but I'm wondering if either dgVoodoo 2.3x or even Zeckie's wrappers would do just as well on a system basis--although if I read his instructions correctly it doesn't look like Z's wrapper will run under any version of dosbox...;/

Anyone have a little experience with using one or more of the wrappers they might like to share? If not, well, I guess I'll just have to keep tinkering myself until I can get some solid information...
Best advice I can give is to try it out yourself. No you can't run multiple glide wrappers at the same time. There are several posts regarding which wrapper people think is the best. Some swear to Zeckenseack's (which is my personal vote) and others swear to dgVoodoo. Some speculate that it just depends on your graphics card's age, but that seems to be debunked by others. So good luck and let us know what you find out

Thanks! I erred above--it's not Zeckensack out with a new version today it's dgVoodoo, with 2.31. He says he has rewritten it from the ground up. Unfortunately, though, I can't get dgVoodoo 2.31 to work with *anything* at the moment...;/ dgV renders the KQ8 loading screens and then promptly loses the scene and I get a black screen with the sound effects running--game is running, but I just can't see it. That's just a bit too large a handicap for me to live with at the moment...:]

But the *bright spot* is that Zeckie's .84c Glide Wrapper is currently working splendidly in 8.1.1x64! Great--I've actually got a playable frame-rate that appears (fingers crossed) to be stable enough to allow me to play the game! That is, until I turn on the Lighting option (800x600)...;) The improvement with the option on is slight and so it's easy to pick the playable frame-rates, instead...;) Yep, Zeckensack seems to have the only workable KQ8 game in town, at least for me at the moment.

I'm using a lot of options like mipmapping but so far the only thing slowing me down to a major degree is that Glide lighting option from the graphics options screen. I'm pretty happy with this so far, so please excuse me while I get back to a bit more experimentation....;) (I swear I have as much fun tinkering with these games as I do playing them--but *only* if I can in the end get them to run, of course...;) ) I shall return one day with news, if any!

Update: Still going strong with Zeckie's Glide Wrapper in KQ8--discovered the added bonus of the fact that since Zeckie is using OpenGL, the Catalysts (and I'd assume nVidia's drivers, too) do a nice job of 8x FSAA'ing & 16x AF'ing the Glide output! Makes a great deal of difference in the image quality--the game is so lightweight by my HD 7850 2GB's standards that it scarcely has to breath deep...;) The game is actually a lot of fun so far--I had completely forgotten it!

Can't just use an earlier version of DGvoodoo 2?

But in anycase Zeckesack's a great option. Just don't try doubling the game resolutions using the wrapper (it's an option in the Zeckensack's settings menu)! It really takes a hit!

Personally I prefer the standard 800x600 option, just because it gives you more view onscreen.

Well, I had the same experience with dgV 2.3--that is, I couldn't get it to work, either. But you make a good point so maybe I'll take another look at a pre-2.3 version of dgV.

So far, though, the only way I can run Lands of Lore 2 with 3dfx acceleration is with nGlide, but nGlide is no good for KQ8...;) And can't run nGlide & Zeckie's GW at the same time. So right now nGlide is uninstalled (that means no LoL2 unless I remove Zeckensack & reinstall nGlide) and I'm running Zeckie's GW at 800x600 for KQ8. I'm with you on the resolutions--especially since I can use the 14.3b Catalysts to apply 8xFSAA EQ & 16x AF to the OpenGL output, I have no real *need* to try and run the game at the "high res" of 1600x1200.
Only way I know to get around the conflicting/different driver issue is to copy the files for the particular drivers I want to use directly into the game folders, and have each game load the drivers as needed.

That way I may have any number of games with different glide drivers. Nglide works better for some, dgvoodoo 2 for others, and zeckensecks for others...

The only problem I have is figuring out which folder and where in the folder to copy the files so that they automatically get used.

Btw, if you get dgvoodoo 2 to work, I found I could double the resolutions without much impact at all. It's pretty spectacular actually. The only problem I see with forcing doubled resolutions though, tends to cause the 2D UI and menus to look extremely pixelated (like VGA rather than SVGA).

Good news...that's what I've kind of been doing, sort of...;)

Amen...;)

Baggins, all I can figure is that I'm doing something wrong relating to installing and running dgV2....in KQ8, after I've uninstalled nGlide and Zeckensack and rebooted, I run the dgv2 setup and install the configuration to the KQ8 directory, as Dege says the first place the program looks for the config is in the game's directory (then in the data folder within if not present in the game root.)

What happens with KQ8 is that program opens the main menu in Software mode, but the Glide option inside KQ8 is grayed out and cannot be selected...the D3d option is available, but of course crashes the moment it is selected. Even if I edit the options.cs file to read Glide instead of software--the game still fires up in software having detected no Glide capability at all when dgV2.31 is running. It will not run, however, but very slowly loads, through the two loading screens, and promptly crashes--even in software mode--just as though I had selected D3d mode.

I'm trying to figure out what I've done wrong with dgV2.31...! Any suggestions will be most appreciated...;)

Update: Back to the HiRes option with Zeckensack...;) Setting the game for 640x480 Glide, with the "Try HiRes" option, is either giving me 1280x960 or 1600x1200 (where I have the maximum set)...;) With FSAA set to 4x in the Catalysts and everything pretty much maxed out for KQ8 in the Z Configurator, it is fairly impressive and probably the best I'll get with this game, I'd imagine.

Update: I've verified that with Zeckensack's I'm running KQ8 at a real *1600x1200* by selecting the 800x600 res and his "Try HiRes" option (which boosts my actual display to 16x12 by doubling the horizontal and vertical resolutions.) Great! This game is far more enjoyable for me now than it was when it was new, IIRC.
