Given how lenient death is in King's Quest VII, this is by no means an urgent problem. But...

Even when I take the shortest path from where I get the firecracker to where I need to use it, it still blows up three times along the way. I imagine that this is due to my processor's speed being too high; I'm running the game on Windows 7.

I've played through this part just keep walking as in CLICK CLICK CLICK BOOM BOOM BOOM you will die 100+ times before getting to the door, as far as I know this is the only solution to the problem. I don't believe Sierra ever got a chance to fix it.
I think a really late version of KQVII "fixed" the firecracker bug, but I remember playing the game recently and I racked up 155 deaths before reaching the door. I would die at literally every step!
This happens because Kq7 was originally a cpu-game and with newer cpu's things just happen too fast sometimes. When I play the game on my anciant dinosaur with 8MB ram from 1995, it never explodes, but on my craptop from 2001 it explodes about fifty times before I get there.

Use the installer which should upgrade your KQ7 & fix the bug
