I'm not expecting it to be anything like the old King's Quests... But will judge it on its own merits, whatever it turns out to be. I might be pleasantly surprised. I refuse to be hyped up about it.
I do like the art style so far though, based on what little we got of the title screen. I would like to see a character models and a true background area though... Hopefuly its not HD 'plastic' 3D quality like some newer games....
Personally I'm of a mind that if a company can tell a good story, KQ could grow into many different genres.
Actiiviison I think alluded to that idea when they said that there could be more than one KQ released a year or even with a short period of time by different indie groups with original ideas. Each telling a different story.
Would I want a single main Canon? Sure. The original often simple but connected storyline has always been my favorite part of the series.
But I suppose there is room under this new banner for the possibility of people getting the AGDI The Father sequel set in an alternate timeline, or any sort of rebooted timelines for that matter. Does AGDI count as "Indie"?
If the game turned out to be a side scrolling artsy puzzle-adventure with cartoony comic style art, like say Valiant Hearts? I liked that game, easy sure, but was original and tells a great dramatic story. So perhaps someone could do something similar with KQ as well, and make a great game on its own.
I don't think its going to be KQ8 part 2, probably not a 3D action game with RPG combat (the framing story doesn't seem to allow for that, unless it really goes the way of Aragorn's Quest, with themed levels)..
I do think it will probably be 'easier' than the old games... Almost every game revival has turned out that way, to entice the largest possible audience and recoup development costs at least. Its a shame to us old school players, but still there is room for the respect to the series as a whole to remain there.
Also apparently Ken Williams and John Williams have both given their blessings for this revival. No idea if Roberta has said anything though. Sierra originally was about giving its developers room to come up with original ideas... So in that way I think making Sierra a indies brand goes back to the original Sierra concept. Even if the various games themselves released may vary wildly from Sierra's adventure roots.
