I'm trying to play King's Quest 8, I just bought it on GoG.
When I start up the game I get forced into a low resolution fullscreen mode. The game skips the opening movie and takes me straight to the main menu. At this point every thing keeps blinking in and out. If I get to options I can stop the blinking by setting the graphics to 3DFX mode instead of DriectDraw mode; I cannot select the third option, Direct3D.
So far inconvenient but not too problematic. The problem comes when I try to start the game with New Game. I get taken to a loading screen that says "Copying files to hard drive...", the progress bar at the bottom ticks up till it gets to about 1/6th full, at this point it stops, it doesn't progress any further no matter how long I wait. The game is frozen and the only way out of the game is to Ctrl+Alt+Delete and end the process. One time even this didn't work, it had locked up my entire computer and I had to force restart.
I've already done some searching around for solutions and so far nothing works. I have tried various compatibility modes and settings, including running the game as Administrator. I've got a CD drive, both physical and virtual, so that common problem doesn't seem to be the issue.
I have tried using a different glide wrapper, the highly recommended dgVooDoo2, but I have no idea how to make it work. I can't find any clear instructions for it (the ReadMe.txt basically just said, "it just works") and I don't know how to remove the nGlide wrapper that the game automatically installs.
EDIT: I have figured out the above wrapper issues. the dgVooDoo2 wrapper is now working for me, however the game still freezes at the same spot.
Any help or advice would be appreciated. Here's my system specs for reference (it's a laptop):
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit (Service Pack 1)
DirectX version: 11.0
GPU processor: GeForce GT 630M
Processor: Intel Core i7-3610QM CPU @ 2.30GHz 2.30GHz
