Do the voices for Kings Quest 6 work? I know by default the DOS version does not unless you are installing the windows version and play from the CD.
I know it shouldn't matter, but for 5$ more I can goto gamestop and buy the collection which includes 1/2/3 and 7 which is a better deal, but for the sake of supporting gog.com I'd be up for buying if the voices for 6 work.
anyway, holla :)
It is the DOS version, and it does have the voices.
Just loaded it up to check, it runs in DOSBox.
Running in a window seems to work best though (ALT+Enter).
Voices work just fine here for the dos version. And actually, I just got the windows version running yesterday and not all the voices are available in the windows version as the are in the dos version. Such as, when quiting the game. I also noticed, things animated, such as plants in the dos version, don't animate in the windows version. I noticed this at the beach scene when the game first starts. Although the music sounds better in the windows version but that's no biggie.

Be sure that soundDrv=GENMIDI.DRV is selected in the RESOURCE.CFG.

Thanks, the music does sound better now. But still no voices. I haven't played to much with the audioDrv yet but what do you suggest?
While the DOS version uses RESOURCE.CFG for the config file, the Windows version uses SIERRA.INI. Your SIERRA.INI should have something like the following:
[info]
title=King's Quest VI
cursorview=true
minhunk=204K
minhires=375K
audioBuffs=2
synthtype=highsynth
genmidi=true
audpath=.\
audio=.\
sync=.\
movieplayer=0
and the shortcut to start the game needs the path to the SIERRA.INI after the path to SCIWV.EXE.

I know your post on this subject was over a year ago, but figured I'd ask anyway in the hope that you or someone else might have the answer.......How exactly are you able to run the windows version, as I would love to be able to play the game w/ the improved character "portraits" of the windows version. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I beleive you can use the daily build of ScummVM.

http://scummvm.org/downloads/#daily

Run ScummVM, choose Add Game and browse to the folder where you installed KQ6. It should give you the option to play the DOS or Windows version. Since I have both DOS and Windows version installed in the same folder, I can't swear if it will work just off the DOS version. But it doesn't hurt to see if it works since ScummVM uses it's own executables for most of the games.
The newest stable version works just fine with KQVI as well, even makes the Windows version work.
That is true. However, if you want to use the white mouse pointers used in the windows version, you'll have to use the daily builds. The stable version only uses the DOS mouse pointers. So it's all up to personal preference. I personally prefer the windows version of the pointers.

1.) Install VDMSound.
2.) Download this zipped file and put the "King's Quest VI.bat" and "WIN" in your King's Quest 6 folder. (You may have to edit both of these files if you KQ6 is in a different directory.)
3.) Right click the "King's Quest VI.bat" file and select to run with VDMSound.

Hope that works for you!

Thanks, that worked like a charm! Now I'm off to save the princess :)

Cool, glad to hear! I never used ScummVM myself but will have to try it.

Just a quick update now that I've played through the game......it's about 95% flawless with Scummvm , occassionally the mouths of the character portraits will not move during certain lines of dialogue, but that's pretty minor. The only frustrating problem is that the game freezes every time after collecting the scrap of paper from the black widow's web, making this one task impossible to complete, but even this is not a gamebreaker as you can do the task to read the scrap of paper and then restore to an earlier save. However since you have to restore to an earlier save you can never earn the points for completing the task. Regardless it was still great to play one of my favorite games ever again.
