i downloaded kings quest 4, 5, 6 from the site. when i opened the game it had no color and lines running through the text in opening sequence. when character appears no color and the same lines????? other two seem to run fine

Please give us more info. Like what OS you're running, etc.

I ran into the same problem. I pressed ALT + TAB to minimize the window and the red lines went away, revealing text that asked a security question along the lines of "What's the second word in the third paragraph of your manual?" The question is different each time you open the game. GOG offers a manual to download, but the corresponding words don't work. sooo, new question, where can we find the right manual??

The correct codes are in the manual that GOG supplies with the game.

There is a table of all the words that you need.
