Ok, I DL'd all the King's Quests today (from GOG of course) and installed, but I can't run them... I looked in the King's Quest 1 folder, tried to run KQ1.COM and it just pops up a compatibility error to do with my OS being 64bit. Same for 2 and 3. I remember having a similar problem with another DOS game I purchased from GOG, but I'm buggered if I can remember what I did wrong. Can't see anything else in the King's Quest 1 folder that could be the game.

On installation I elected to not have desktop shortcuts which I remember part of my solution to getting the other game (pretty sure it was Masters of Orion 1) to run, but that was ages ago so I really don't remember what the solution was. Having the same problem with Zork 1 and seeing as I can't see any other threads relating to this issue, and both sets of games are listed as being Windows 7 64bit compatible, I'm guessing I'm just being an idiot somehow.

Never mind, problem solved, I checked the Master of Orion forum and it turns out I already had a thread there where the solution was waiting from the time I was having problems getting those games to run. Shouldn't have been so quick to post a new thread... my bad.

Anyway, if anybody runs across the same problem, the solution is to re-install and allow the desktop shortcuts, they aren't just straight shortcuts from the look of the file path. Obviously if you don't want them on the desktop feel free to cut and paste them to where ever you do want them, the game will still run fine, just make sure you always run from the shortcut otherwise you're guna get the same error I was getting.

Sidenote: OMG these games are old school, I was all like "shit I beet Monkey Island 1 when I was 6, I love adventure games and will be just fine"... oh god was I just a little bit wrong, Monkey Island is old school but this... this is proper old school.

I'm sure I'll get the hang of it though, 5 minutes of wearily eyeing the starting area hardly equates to "giving it a shot".

Haha, yeah, these old parser games can be quite intimidating if you've never played them before. The King's Quests are great classics though, and apart from a few brutally difficult puzzles, they are a ton of fun to play. I hope you enjoy!

If you can't get along with these ones if you google kings quest VGA remakes a couple groups have remade the first 3 with vga graphics. I believe the 4th is also being worked on if not already out.
I have been playing King's Quest 7 for quite a while. I finished about 7 or 8 games. But now, I have having a problem talking to the three ladies of fate. They won't talk to me at all. I went through all the regions--the forest, the desert, the town, and ooga booga land. I am unable to figure out how to get the three ladies of fate to talk tome. I tried deleting the game and starting all over again. But when I come to the three ladies of fate, there is no talking with them. What must I do? Or is there something wrong with the program?
There's definitly something you haven't done or someone you haven't talked to, since the Fates won't talk to you.
I've played that game so many times, and almost every time I get stuck on them just as you are now. Try talking to everyone, and look at stuff you haven't looked at for a while. It usually helps.
Also, listen a bit more carefully to what all say, as there's usually something you haven't listened properly for that is your next task.

ALL the quests are TRIGGERED by events. Nothing much happens until you do something beforehand. There are patches for some of these bugs, but GOG may not be aware of it. I also have issues running the later games, i.e. Perils and Absence, Even KQ8, which was written for windows 3.1 and xp have many bugs. I have MOE, the last one of the series, and while it ran on XP, it does not do well on W-7 Prol Of course, the eight processors running at 4+Mhz might be part of the issue. It seems to me that most of these bugs are related to CLOCK/Timer issues. There are programs that will fix these issues, but GOG does not seem to be interested. I caant play half the games I have DL, and sometimes cant DL games on my library. SAD.
