I have been playing both The Legend and Armored Princess recently and still can't resist the one more turn enchantment (though there are no actual turns). ^^ Time just vanishes while playing.
Though there are some improvements in AP and Crossworlds, I think TL is more charming and might also be better for new players. All of the game elements are visible early on and you learn, that you can't take on each and every quest immediately.
Also, there is a bit more variety in TL, you can reach the neighbouring countries from the start, the marsh adding some moody environment from the beginning as contrast to the colorful starting region. In AP you are stuck to a few islands and it takes time and some island hopping until you get at least to Verona.
Also, the playground is a bit wider and larger in TL. I love the change of the music, e. g. when you go to the Islands of Freedom and get the lively music and atmosphere that reminds me always of the Pirates of the Caribbean with swashbuckling and skeletons and eyepatched pirates with parrots. :D
I have played both games again and again and it is always a joy to come back to them.
