Hey all. I just bought the game after reading some exciting reviews at RPS and I was quite eager to play it during the holidays. Alas, it seems there is some kind of a font problem, probably only for the Mac version, that's ruining the whole experience.

You can see these links for an example (the attach files option doesn't work for some reason) of just how bad the text looks like:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/kl0v7buewn1rbhn/Screen%20Shot%202012-12-20%20at%2011.18.23%20AM.png

Changing the game resolution didn't help. I've also tried switching antialiasing and vsync on and off, but that didn't help either.

Anyone (particularly on Mac) having similar issues?

I'm running OS X 10.8.2 on the newest Macbook Air.

Hi, i have same problem on iMac and OS X 10.8.2
I wrote to GOG's support, but they couldn't give me a solution and I think there is little they could do anyway as they are just distributing the game.

I wrote to Katauri/1C's support, I gave them some screenshots and my Mac specs and I'm still waiting for a solution by them.

I'll post here if there is any development on this.
In the meantime my advice to you is to write to 1C's support too. If more people complain about the problem, it will raise it's priority.
I'm also having issues. Tried lots of different things, but it seems to be an inherent problem with the mac port.

Game is unplayable.

Okay, update:

I've managed to improve the readability a little, it's not perfect, and I've not tested it throughout the game, but you can increase the font size by doing the following:

1. Right click App -> 'Show Package Contents' -> Contents, Resources, data
2. Make a backup up 'font' (copy and paste it to your desktop or the data folder)
3. Open the font folder and sort by 'name'
4. Delete 'ft_1_5...' to 'ft_1_12...' inclusive there are two files per font size to delete - the first 'ft' font that remains is ft1_13_0 - you can leave the eft fonts.

I noticed it generally worked better if you delete 13 as well, but the battle log doesn't show in this case.

Please send that information to our Support department, if you don't mind. This may prove to be useful. Alos, please send your hardware info as well so we can see what we have to work with and all that. Thanks :D
It's been more than a month now since 1C's support has last written to me and they still haven't offered a patch for this, nor has announced any plans to fix it. It seems like they don't really care for Mac users at all.

The whole conversation with them was very disappointing and I can't imagine how I'll buy any of their games again with that attitude of theirs.

Has this issue been fixed yet? I'm curious if I should try it on my Mac, but I don't know if it is a native port of it's just Wine emulation running under the game (which I'm not interested in).

EDIT: I just did a search and found an article that claims that the Mac version of King's Bounty is native, but that it runs at almost half the speed compared to when he runs the Windows version under Wine... very weird:

As far as I know the fonts issue hasn't been fixed and my opinion is that it never will be.
As for your other questions I really can't answer as I haven't played the PC version, and it was a long time since I played the Mac version.

Hey guys, just chiming in here to express I'm having the same difficulty. The fonts on the Mac port are *extremely* small, making the game unplayable. I can't read any text short of headings.

I tried the font-deleting approach but that would prevent the game from loading.

I've tried modifying the font sizes by editing "fonts2.cfg" inside of the game itself (Show package contents) at /Applications/King's Bounty - The Legend.app/Contents/Resources/data/fonts2.cfg, but that didn't have any effect. I tried a similar trick described at GameFAQs (sorry I can't post the link, due to the forum software, Google for "kings bounty increase font size gamefaqs") which has you create a "mods" directory. That didn't seem to have any effect either. I also tried expanding the "data.kfs" (which is a zip file), modifying the fonts.cfg file directly, then rezipping the data directory... with no luck either.

So far, I haven't had any luck at all fixing the Mac version. For now I'm redownloading the Windows version and going to wrap it in a Wineskin.
Hi guys, I've had modest success "fixing" the fonts in this game by renaming several of the font files in /Applications/King's Bounty - The Legend.app/Contents/Resources/data/font. Here's the complete mapping that I used:

For all files that started with "eft1_" or "ft1_" between 8 and 16, I renamed for that file name minus 3. That is, "eft1_8_0.tga" became "eft1_5_0.tga" and "eft1_8.fnt" became "eft1_5.fnt". This effectively increased the font size for all fonts by 3 pixels for sizes 5 - 13. For sizes 14 - 16, I did the same thing only increased the font sizes by only 2 instead of 3.

Attached are results after modification, for the options and loading pages. They are now much more legible, but not perfect. At least it's at the point where I can make out the basic idea, whereas before things were so small I couldn't even read it if I focused on it.

EDIT: The forum software cropped off my image names, so for reference they are in this order:

1) Load screen with default fonts.
2) Load screen with replaced fonts.
3) Options screen with default fonts.
4) Options screen with replaced fonts.

Here's a link to my modified fonts. To use, unzip and then drop all the fonts into /Applications/King's Bounty - The Legend.app/Contents/Resources/data/font. You can view the contents of the King's Bounty - The Legend.app file by right-clicking on the application, then selecting "View package contents".

The only downside I've seen so far to this is that there isn't enough room on the initial character creation form to fit the full description of each character with the increased font. However, after you've seen this screen the first time, it's no longer an issue. Most other areas that have fonts either have enough room already or have scroll bars. I'll let you know if I encounter any other problems with the increased font sizes.

All of this is generally rooted in the problem that the Mac version doesn't seem to use the "real" fonts included with the application at all. Instead it falls back to using these 'tga' and 'fnt' files, which are rasterized bitmap font files. If native fonts were used to begin with, fonts wouldn't be so hard to read in their small sizes (especially for those with high-DPI screens). Alas, this Mac port seems to have been a little half-baked. I did manage to get a Wineskin around the Windows version and fonts looked much better, but errors during gameplay made me reconsider trying to hack the Mac fonts.
