I've used the Books of Death a few times to get to the land of the dead without any trouble, but now neither of the books works. I get the walking-boots cursor like a map edge instead of the grasping-hand cursor for interacting, and clicking walks up to one and doesn't do anything.

I think the last time I used one successfully might have been in the middle of an enemy's starting-combat animation, if that's possibly relevant.

Version is 1.7 (build 35,234). I can't find anyone else reporting a bug like this, and it seems like there's no way I can finish the game without a fix or workaround.

Have you :
1 tried an earlier save?
2 backed up your saves and reinstalled the game ?
An old save, from before I encountered the error, now has it.

Where are the save files to back up?

It may depend on where you've got it installed.
on my system it's
Z:\Kings Bounty\Kings Bounty\$save
but if your on windows 7 or vista and the game is in the program files directory they may be somewhere in your documents folder.

When you find it copy the entire folder somewhere safe reinstall KIngs Bounty and replace the new $save folder with your backup.
This worked for me when parts of the scenery started disappearing.
After reinstalling, my most recent save file still isn't working, but an older one is. I'm still getting the wrong cursor, but maybe the books were always like that and I just hadn't noticed when they were working correctly.

I lost some sidequest progress over this, but at least I can keep playing. I guess in the future I'll check whether the books are working before and after I do anything big, so I don't make useless progress in a doomed game.
I'm wondering whether anyone can confirm whether this save is broken on other peoples' machines: http://home.comcast.net/~pshaughn/Great%20Forest%20%281%29.sav
(update): Solved it, I think. After reinstalling the game I moved to another map, saved, quit the game, loaded the game, went back to Great Forest, and it worked.
I'm still curious whether anyone explain how it could have happened in the first place, though.

The save is broken when you first try to use the book, if you move to the other book, that works.
then if you return to the first book that also functions normally.

I'm glad the reinstall got you working again. It looks like both the game files and the saves get corrupted . but the reinstall manages to get enough corrected to continue.
Your game has some interesting variations in locations and opponents from mine.
