The more I think about it, the more apprehensive I am about purchasing Kingdom Come: Deliverance from GOG, considering the amount of patching that is evidently still in order. If I could be assured that the GOG version has not been neglected in the least bit thus far, that would at least be something to go on. But patching neglect by developers is not a new thing at GOG.

Normally, I want my games to stay eternally the same, which is a great benefit of zero DRM. Not in this case, though.

Well Waltc, there are quite often different patch levels between steam and gog. Sometimes, gog never gets final patches for games. That's what people ask about patches and difference in versions between steam and gog.

Wait--is that what waltc was talking about--he didn't know that there can be significant differences in content availability, patching, access to features, etc. between the GOG and DRM-laden versions of a game?

The only thing I could figure is that he was speaking to developers, as it were--making a point that even though the distributor or DRM differs, the game should be given the same attention.

I assure you, waltc, I have more than once been disappointed by one or other variation of "The GOG version lacks...".

Are they still working on patches? I know they announced a big DLC months ago, so is it reasonable to think they will release a GOTY at some point which might include more bug-fixes? I usually do not buy "incomplete" games.

I ask seriously: Has any GOTY release ever included actual bug fixes? I'm willing to believe so, but I don't think it's the norm--not in recent years at any rate.

In my experience, GOTY is generally all the DLC + base game. I think it's used to help keep the price higher. Sometimes the base game gets an update or upgrade with GOTY edition.

Well, whether it's called GOTY or Anniversary Edition, Enhanced Edition or something like that... Witcher 1 and 3 come to mind. Didn't Witcher 1 include a complete inventory overhaul?

Then there was a "bundle" of the Deponia games with all games seamlessly included in one, with a new map and a "quest log".

So, yes, I would say it still happens that the developers continue working on the game and do more than just putting the single DLCs together in one installer.

I'm not aware of any of the games you mention being examples of a GOTY or 'Ultimate Edition' release including actual bug fixes. As I said, it may have happened, but it's not the norm. The Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut actually used an earlier, unpatched version of the game with lots of bugs that the original release didn't have, if you can believe it.

The Witcher: Enhanced Edition was not a GOTY-type release. It was just what it's name implies, and it was way, WAY more than just an inventory overhaul. It's mind-boggling how much work was put into it. Thousands of lines of dialogue were re-recorded, new NPC types and variations were introduced, combat was improved, loading times were reduced by literally 90%, which to be honest was one of the most important things that needed to be addressed, as the loading times were originally ridiculous.

The Witcher 3 however does have a GOTY edition, but I don't know if it has any bug fixes or problems addressed. Perhaps someone who knows can chip in, as I don't feel like researching it at the moment.

I can't play with a controller (ps4 or 360 pads) and my KB stops working now and again and i have to restart the game, kind of only just about glad i only got this game in the GOG 10yr bundle instead of sticking with the pirated version.... so many bugs til this day, i feel like this turned into a cash grab.

All i'm saying is, it might still be possible that at some point there is some kind of re-release which includes all previous content but beyond that some further bug-fixing. I neither say it is the norm, nor do I say it will definitely happen.

It might be only wishful thinking. And I don't know how big the game's fan-base is and whether there is a lot of communication with the community. Do they listen to feedback? Are they still working on the game?

It does matter what you call it, though. I was just making the point that--as far as I understand things--a 'GOTY' (or if it didn't actually win GOTY, 'Ultimate', etc) edition is a release roughly a year after the original release, solely for the purpose of including all existing content and spurring sales.

The Witcher: Enhanced Edition on the other hand had nothing to do with that. There were no expansions, no DLC. It wasn't released to spur sales, it didn't win GOTY. The only reason for it was because the original release had a lot of serious issues that needed to be taken care of, so they took care of them, and then released an Enhanced Edition which was free of charge to everyone who bought the original version. It is actually the only example I know of in which a developer actually put months of work and millions of dollars into fixing a game like that, all for free to those who purchased the game.

But as far as Kingdom Come: Deliverance, their could be a GOTY-type release, I suppose. But if the developer hasn't fixed anything by now, or shown any inclination to, I don't know that it is likely to ever happen. I'm certainly hoping otherwise though. I truly was going to pay full price for this at release. It's too bad the way things turned out.

Yeah, it's one of the few games on my wishlist, and due to the buggy state I haven't bought it yet. Hopefully something will happen. Another disappointment to me was Elex. It's such a pity. There are so few newer "big" titles on GOG, and the few are often buggy or somewhat not as good as one had hoped for.

What is the deal with Elex? I have it on my "Games of Interest" list, but I don't really know much about it.

It's just that I think this is the first time I've heard anyone claim that they've had no problems at all. My understanding is that there are a good deal of problems--the point of variance being whether or not those problems are severe and significantly affect gameplay.
