There are many things unexplained, and the game doesn't tell you anything. For example:

· First of all, how to change your king/queen. Apparently you can change it by pressing the down key when the game loads, but I don't know if you can do more than that. There isn't a tooltip about it either.
· The statues, apparently their effect is temporary? And why does it look like it can go up to 6 (or 7?) but I can't do anything once it reaches 3?
· What does the Save button really do? Because all I can see is that I can't change color the next time.
· What does the banner do in the main menu? you can click to remove it, but what does it mean?
· Attacking the gates, is there anything else I can do? Because even with full buffs from the statue, attacking on day 50+ is a waste of time, the 2 knights and 6 archers die in 3 seconds when a horde pops out of the portal after the first arrow.

Also, it'd be nice to have more information, like the number of people you have

I hadn't even tried clicking on the banner on the menu, but I just tried it and that's why you're able to change the colour of your king/queen's clothes when you start a new game. Certainly makes a change seeing something other than green!

Saving just allows you to carry on from the point at which you saved it, so even if you change the king/queen in any way when loading, you'll start back from where you left it previously, with exactly the same king/queen.

The statues only give you a boost for one day/night cycle and can only be boosted 3 times. You have to either top them up each day, or return after 3 days and fill them all again if you want the constant benefit.

I'm not sure what can be done about the gates, as I've had the same problem. I even destroyed three of them in one game before level 35 and the next one just constantly annihilated my knights and archers as you described. I know that attacking them straight after a blood moon makes things easier (because nothing spawns on the following night), but even that strategy didn't seem to help after a certain point. It's incredibly frustrating.
After a bit more experimenting, it seems that if you put 3 coins into the flag when you first upgrade the camp, it sets the colour and banner into the menu, so that if you start a new character, they will always be that colour (which explains why I never previously had anything but green kings and queens). Removing the banner in the menu means that it's no longer locked in, so you can make a new king/queen with random banner designs and colours.

You're right about it needing some explaining! Took me ages to realise that.

Also, you can safely run behind the gates/portals in the first couple of days without any worry. You only get attacked at night, so if you find a chest behind one, you can just drop a few coins and be fine.

The developers are all about no "hand holding", but I think they took it a bit too far. I like that there are things to figure out, but they could at least explain the basics. Like that you can change what character you are starting with be pressing down, I think, when the horse gallops in the loading screen to change who you are.
Well, I do like the fact the game doesn't explain anything, but it's a bit of a problem when things are counter-intuitive...

Anyway, here are my observations so far:
- The amount of coins you get at the beginning of each day is dependent on the level of your castle. Last level brings you only one coin per day
- Upgrading your castle to rock also upgrades the innermost walls, so you can spare some coins (you need builders available, though)
- The statues buff your builders/archers for up to 3 nights, depending on how much you pay. Buffed builders add an extra level of resistance to walls ; buffed archers are far more precise
- The other artifact allows you to build stone walls/towers/castle
- Grass makes your horse recover much faster
- The last castle upgrade unlocks knights, which can go on expeditions to destroy the portals
- You can get past portals when they are not glowing
- Farmers are the only stable source of coins

Also, since the last upgrade, the game is more balanced, and it is now actually possible to destroy the portals without having to rush too much.
