When I start the game, it opens with a warning message saying that the game's text may not display properly unless I change my Font Size setting to Small Fonts. In the game itself, a lot of text is cut off or simply never displayed because of the size of the text.

Is there a way around this short of having to increase/decrease font size to something different from what I normally run in order to play the game each time?

Sounds weird, and i don't really have an answer for you, but what type of monitor are you using, in that it might be having an issue displaying 640x480 that the game uses? Or your video card even? So look at your settings and display hardware and see if either has an issue with displaying the low resolution the game uses.
Have the same problem. I get the same warning, and then most of the text in the game is not visible. Not sure what the problem is.

I’m not a Windows user, but back in 1999 you needed to do exactly what the warning tells you to do. I don’t know if this is a Windows setting any longer, but it was part of Windows, not video drivers, back in the day.

Presumably it was originally a limitation in our development tool mTropolis, which went extinct before we released.

Just wondering if you had any luck with this?

I am having the exact same problem, there are whole chunks of text missing - descriptions cut off mid sentence when an event happens.

But "normal" is the smallest font size in windows settings - which is what I have it on now - and they only get bigger from there.

So - did you find a solution?, because I'm stuck - damn nice game too.
ok ok...ahem.

I realised those strange looking things next to the text are actually scroll buttons.

And my monitor needed a little adjustment.

So all good now.
I have the same problem but only with the text boxes when you look for trading information. My font is already on smallest (set automatically when I start the game). Any tips?
I found I had this kind of problem; same warning, much of the text (especially numbers) running off the screen.

Turns out I'd already installed a more recent version of the Erasmus font used in the game, which replaced the font coming with the game. Uninstalling it fixed the issue.

Where did you get an Erasmus font? We made a custom version, and I don’t think I have ever seen a digital version.
Fairly sure this has to do with your Windows font size settings. On the desktop, right click, choose Screen Resolution. In the dialog that pops up, select the "Make text and other items larger or smaller" option and make sure that the "Smaller (100%) setting is selected (you may have to log off and back on for it to take effect) and no, I've not managed to find a way around having to do this.

Thanks a bunch for this solution, it fixed the problem for me. :) My Windows 8 interface is now in squint-o-vision though, so I'll probably switch back to my original setting when I know I won't be playing KoDP for a while.

I think here: http://www.1001freefonts.com/erasmus.font

Its probably just a coincidence of names?

Yes, must be. We made a bitmap, but I think the second one at http://www.ffonts.net/tag/0/erasmus (Erasmus Light Commercial Font) is based on the old font we used. I believe this Erasmus did not have licensing that worked with including it in a game (we had similar problems back in 1997).
